  • Corruption: An Uneven Field of Research—Between State and Private Topics

    Open Access•Fabián Belmar, Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Societies•2025•References: 22

Research on state corruption has flourished since the 1990s; however, studies focused on corruption within non-state organizations are still limited. In this study, we conducted a systematic review of 18,435 articles from the Web of Science database, covering the years 2002 to 2020. Using topic modeling Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), we analyzed the field of corruption research. Our analysis identified four main dimensions: state corruption a…

  • Contemporary visions of the next apocalypse: Climate change and artificial intelligence

    Open Access•Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 33

The ancient Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian traditions are the main sources of the eschatological compositions of the apocalypse. Through the combination of various symbolic elements and a prefigured narrative, apocalyptic visions offer a script that can be applied in diverse historical situations to deal with the uncertainty of the present, to justify political action and to allocate resources. In contemporary society, the high complexity and si…

  • Mythical Infrastructuring: The Work of Stories in the Making of the Chacao Bridge, Southern Chile

R Cordero, Aldo Mascareño et al.•ARTICLE•Nature and Culture•2023

The very nature of large-scale infrastructure projects—long design and construction periods, high investment, and impact on social and natural spaces—makes them prone to socioecological and technical conflicts. These conflicts materialize in stories that become keystones in the making of infrastructure. In this article, we analyze the infrastructuring power of stories by drawing on the case of the Chacao Bridge on Chiloé Island in southern Chile,…

  • Close to the Edge: From Crisis To Critical Transitions in Social Systems Theory

    Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2022

Niklas Luhmann has considered the concept of crisis as a negative self-description of modern society. However, in different argumentative contexts, he uses the concept to refer to operative processes in and between partial systems that were not further developed, such as interruption of systemic relations, crisis threshold, and rapid transitions. Drawing on theoretical analyses and empirical research, I argue that the theory of critical transitio…

  • Critical Transitions in Ecosystems and Society. The Contribution of Sociological Systems Theory to the Analysis of Socio-Environmental Transformations

    Open Access•Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 23

The theory of critical transitions and the theory of self-referential social systems are two well-established theories in the ecosystem and sociological research respectively. A dialogue between them may offer new insights on the complex articulation of the nature and society nexus in socio-environmental transformations. By means of the conceptual reconstruction of both theories and drawing on relevant literature of social-ecological research, in…

  • Drawing constitutional boundaries: A digital historical analysis of the writing process of Pinochet’s 1980 authoritarian constitution

    R Cordero, Aldo Mascareño et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Drawing conceptual boundaries is one of the defining features of constitution-making processes. These historically situated operations of boundary making are central to the definition of what counts as “constitutional” in a political community. In this article, we study the operations of conceptual delimitation performed by the Constitutional Commission (1973–1978) that drafted the 1980 Chilean Constitution, the trademark of Augusto Pinochet’s di…

  • The Limits of Functional Differentiation under Populist Rule in Latin America

    Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2021

Populism has been one of the most outstanding features of Latin American politics throughout the 20 th century. By controlling political and economic operations and appealing to the semantic construction of pueblo (the people), populism has succeeded in shaping a regional variant of functional differentiation. This process is analyzed along three phases of Latin American history, the pre-populist age of caudillos , the classic populism in the 20 …

  • Between Distancing and Interdependence: The Conflict of Solidarities in the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Mauro Basaure, Alfredo Joignant et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 30

In a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19, different national states around the world have introduced strict measures to regulate social interaction that have affected the interdependence of modern societies. In this article, we argue that this handling of the pandemic produces a conflict of solidarities that can be interpreted by expanding Durkheim's classic formulations (organic and mechanical solidarity) to include the distinction between fra…

    Open Access•Juan Luis Ossa, Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Revista MAD•2020

    Open Access•Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Astrolabio•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 1

    Open Access•Hugo Cadenas, Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Sociologia & Antropologia•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

    Open Access•Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Revista MAD•2017

  • On the reflexivity of crises: Lessons from critical theory and systems theory

Open Access•R Cordero, Aldo Mascareño et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 17

The main aim of this article is to offer a sociological concept of crisis that, defined as the expected yet non-lineal outcome of the internal dynamics of modern societies, builds on the synergies between critical theory and systems theory. It contends that, notwithstanding important differences, both traditions concur in addressing crises as a form of self-reproduction of social systems as much as a form of engagement with the complexities and e…

    Open Access•Carlos Hoevel, Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Revista MAD•2016

Clientelistic networks have been a regular research topic in Latin American scholarship, particularly over the last three decades. This research has comprehensively addressed their functioning and consequences for democracy. However, less attention has been paid to draw the conditions of emergence of clientelistic networks in Latin America and the contribution contemporary sociological theory can make to widen the analytical scope of the field. • The different faces of inclusion and exclusion

    Aldo Mascareño, Fabiola Carvajal•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 8

The notions of inclusion and exclusion have a long tradition in sociology, but have gained significant currency more recently in public policy analysis. However, a certain conceptual inflexibility arises when the distinction is applied to complex social situations. This article examines the main approaches to inclusion/exclusion in the sociological tradition, systems theory and the theory of new inequalities. On this basis, five interrelated situ…

  • Redes Informales e Instituciones Democráticas en América Latina

Open Access•Aldo Mascareño, Artur Stamford Da Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Dados•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 26

  • Mechanisms of Risk Production in Modern Cities

Christian Büscher, Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Nature and Culture•2014

Historically, risk assessment and the concept of risk itself have been dominated by environmental, engineering, and economic sciences. Consequently, in analyzing risk production in modern cities, a rather technical view emerges on risks and urban dynamics. Though scientifically grounded and practically useful, this view fails to capture the social complexity of the city, its paradoxes and causalities. Elaborating on the hypothesis that the life-s…

    Open Access•Aldo Mascareño•ARTICLE•Revista MAD•2013

Consequently, in analyzing risk production in modern cities, a rather technical view emerges on risks and urban dynamics. Though scientifically grounded and practically useful, this view fails to capture the social complexity of the city, its paradoxes and causalities. Elaborating on the hypothesis that the life-s…
