Timbuktu and the Songhay Empire: Al-Sadi's Tarikh al-sudan down to 1613 and Other Contemporary Documents
Bibliography of Primary Sources of the Pre-Nineteenth Century East African Coast
The following bibliography is intended to supplement the excellent one (largely) of secondary sources compiled by Thomas Spear and published in History in Africa 27(2000). Research for a forthcoming monograph on the East African coast in the ‘middle’ period has taken me in recent years into a number of libraries and archives in India, East Africa, and Europe. There I have been able to build an extensive listing of source material and oral informa…
Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean to 1800: Reviewing Relations in Historical Perspective
In the strictest sense, Africa, Arabia, Persia, and India are not parts of the same cultural zone. Historically, foreigners, particularly Arabs, have had closer relations with the worlds of the Mediterranean and the Middle East than with Africa, and for their part most Africans have had few direct interactions with Asians. Yet Mother Nature, in the forms of wind and water, has provided the means for an interface between East African and western I…

The Pate Chronicles Revisited: Nineteenth-Century History and Historiography
A few years ago I offered an assessment of the Pate “Chronicles” as a tradition-based source for the history of the East African coast. That paper drew on recensions and versions that were readily available at that time to researchers interested in their historiography. Reasons of length and scope, cited at the end of the paper, restricted discussion to Sultan Fumo Madi b. Abu Bakr and his predecessors (Sultan nos. 1-24), that is to say, up to th…

Reflections on Historiography and Pre-Nineteenth-Century History from the Pate “Chronicles”
The period from 1500 to 1800 was a particularly busy phase in the history of the East African coast. It was a time which witnessed massive demographic shifts in the interior regions, as well as heavy southern Arab immigration and external meddling from Portuguese and Umani interlopers. It saw the destruction of the medieval entrepot of Kilwa Kisiwani and a decline, followed by a slow resurgence, in the fortunes of another medieval powerhouse, Mom…

The Battle of Shela: The Climax of an Era and a Point of Departure in the Modem History of the Kenya Coast

Oral Historiography and the Shirazi of the East African Coast
“Settlements of foreign, predominantly Semitic, peoples” Strandes' gambit concerning ‘Muslim Civilization’ of the east coast of Africa is a familiar one to many Africanists. Persians and Arabs, so the stories go, settled coastal sites as part of the Islamic diaspora; they vanquished less virile African societies; they built cities which were reflections of Middle Eastern prototypes; they imposed their religion; and, they ‘founded’ coastal civiliz…

Randall Pouwels is the holder of a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship for the University of California, and is currently carrying out research on the East African ulama for a Ph.D. thesis. This paper is predicated on the belief that the story of East Coastal immigration and settlement, from its beginnings, largely can be read in the history of economic, social, and political currents in the Middle East. In considering the so-called Shirazi period of colo…

Cross-Cultural Trade in World History
A single theme is pursued in this book - the trade between peoples of differing cultures through world history. Extending from the ancient world to the coming of the commercial revolution, Professor Curtin's discussion encompasses a broad and diverse group of trading relationships. Drawing on insights from economic history and anthropology, Professor Curtin has attempted to move beyond a Europe-centred view of history, to one that can help us und…
