  • Hashtag activism: Tactical Maneuvering in an Online Anti-Mandatory Hijab Movement

    Farinaz Basmechi, Donna A Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 71

This article focuses on the My Stealthy Freedom movement, an anti-mandatory hijab movement in Iran that is organized as an online movement. We explore the utility of a tactical approach for explaining the movement’s pace of insurgency. We employ a conceptual repertoire focused upon the political process model’s core concepts of tactical innovation and tactical adaptations. We supplement these older concepts with the recently proposed concept of t…

  • Repression, the Judicial System, and Political Opportunities for Civil Rights Advocacy During Reconstruction

    Open Access•Donna A Barnes, Catherine Connolly•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Contemporary research on the modern civil rights movement stresses the importance of a triad pattern of civil rights protest, white violence, and federal intervention. We explore the role of the U.S. Supreme Court in constraining federal intervention in response to white supremacist violence during Reconstruction. We conclude that Supreme Court decisions played an important role in defeating the Reconstruction-era civil rights movement by minimiz…

  • Farm Structure and the Economic Well-Being of Nonmetropolitan Counties

    Open Access•Donna A Barnes, Donna Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•1992•Cited by: 14•References: 1

The Goldschmidt thesis (1947, 1978) maintains that increasing farm size in the United States has undermined the well-being of rural communities. Recent studies have cast doubt on this, however. We analyze data for nonmetropolitan counties in the United States, and also incorporate indicators of the nonfarm economic sector into our analysis so that we can explore the net effect of farm structure on well-being. In addition, we distinguish nonmetrop…

  • Organization and Radical Protest: An Antithesis

    Open Access•Donna A Barnes•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 13

It is the contention of this article that Robert Michels' Iron Law of Oligarchy is overdeterministic. Rather than depicting a conservative and nonrepresentative oligarchy as inevitable, this article asks: What factors affect whether there are changes in the policy and strategy stances of protest leaders over time, and whether such changes are in the direction of increased conservatism? Borrowing from the theoretical premises of the resource mobil…

  • Farmers in Rebellion: The Rise and Fall of the Southern Farmers Alliance and People's Party in Texas

    Donna A Barnes•BOOK•Farmers in Rebellion•1984

The years after the Civil War brought struggle to the Southern farmer as the economic mainstay of the South—cotton—steadily dropped in price. Prompted by hard times, farmers in Lampasas County, Texas, gathered in 1877 to discuss what could be done. From these modest origins emerged the National Farmers Alliance and Industrial Union, later known as the Southern Farmers Alliance, a powerful protest movement that played an important role in the form…
