  • The South African News and the Anglo-Boer War of 1899–1902

    Jonathan Derrick•CHAPTER•Edinburgh Companion to British…•2024

The South African News , which started publication with daily and weekly editions in Cape Town on 2 May 1899, was launched as a political venture responding to the South African crisis of the late 1890s involving white South Africans, of Cape Colony and the Afrikaner republics, and the British imperial government. The new newspaper opposed not only South African colonialist Cecil Rhodes but also the power of the mining capitalists and the policy …

The London weekly West Africa , first published on 3 February 1917, was founded by British firms involved in trading and shipping between Britain and West Africa, West Africa was for thirty years or more primarily a magazine for British people living and working in, or linked by their work with, the West African colonies of Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and Gambia: the Colonial Office, colonial officials in those countries, business firms and…

  • Africa's Slaves Today

    Jonathan Derrick•BOOK•Africa's Slaves Today•2022•Cited by: 3

Africa’s Slaves Today, first published in 1975, examines the question of the persistence of slavery in modern Africa. In the Sahara particularly centuries of tradition involving slavery or semi-slavery have ensured a persistence of the status quo in all but name. Recent instance…

The Duala people entered the international scene as merchant-brokers for precolonial trade in ivory, slaves and palm products. Under colonial rule they used the advantages gained from earlier riverain trade to develop cocoa plantations and provide their children with exceptional levels of European education. At the same time they came into early conflict with both German and French regimes and played a leading - if ultimately unsuccessful - role …
