  • Bronowski, Progression and Human Progress

    Clifford Grobstein•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1985

The author reviews Jacob Bronowski’s concept of progress based on evolution as a progression that builds biological and social forms of increasing order and complexity. The author questions Bronowski’s optimism that untrammelled advance in science and technology will inevitably lead to progress. In today’s age of nuclear development and genetic intervention, such advances can conceivably become anti-progressive. Natural selection, which in the pa…

  • Biotechnology and Open University Science

    Open Access•Clifford Grobstein•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•1985

Revolution is a word that is often applied to areas of rapid scientific advance and, as such, it refers not only to a field's progress but also to the width and depth of its consequences. The term is thus appropriately applied to molecular genetics, because the capability for intervention in genetic systems has been elevated dramatically (offering a prospect of further resolution of central biological questions) and because success in practical a…

  • The Moral Uses of 'Spare' Embryos

    Clifford Grobstein•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•1982

Questions are being raised about the morality of freezing spare human\nembryos and eggs, obtained by in vitro fertilization, for future use or\nexperimentation. The author contends that it is difficult to maintain\nscientifically that a "multicellular individual," or person, exists prior to\nthe eight-cell stage of division. Therefore, provided that the safety of the\nprocedure can be established or if the risks are acceptable under a suitable\np…

  • Recombinant DNA and the Body Politic

    Clifford Grobstein•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•1977

Haematocrit and glutathione peroxidase activity in blood, as well as selenium levels in blood, erythrocytes and plasma, were determined in 15 patients during four courses of cisplatin combination treatment for testicular teratoma. The haematocrit steadily declined, necessitating frequent blood transfusions during or after treatment. For patients without blood transfusions during treatment the reduction of the haematocrit averaged 40%. Glutathione…
