Episodic mistrust and selective system trust: Insights from Chinese alternative food networks
This article contributes to comparative anthropological theory by analyzing the conceptual dynamics of episodic mistrust and selective system trust that emerge from ethnographic cases. Following the cue from recent studies that cast mistrust as a productive category in its own right, we explore this idea in the context of a complex modern society suffering from recurrent food safety scandals. We study how people in China allay anxieties about the…
Ethics of Sharing: A Situational Anthropology
This article introduces the special issue on ethics of sharing by way of a conceptual discussion of four key terms that animate the individual contributions: sharing, ethics, situation, and presence. Turning to situational analysis to hold fast the anthropological empirical commitment, each author takes as their point of departure a detailed description of empirical sharing situations. Subsistence Solidarity and the Extension of Trust: Moral Economies of Organic Farming in Northern China
The widespread phenomenon of unsafe food on the Chinese market has been argued to be both symptomatic of moral disregard for the well-being of strangers and productive of social distrust. Organic farming has grown in recent years in response to this situation, and this article discusses the ethical work of farmers based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at one such farm in northern China. While the Community Supported Agriculture model of the f…
Moral Economies of Food in Contemporary China
Chinese transnational students and the global education hierarchy
Recent years have seen a tremendous increase in transnational education mobility. The two trends of international integration and marketisation of higher education have made for a situation in which increasing numbers of aspiring young people worldwide seize the opportunity to study abroad as part of their higher education. No other nation sends more students abroad than China. In 2014, 459,800 students left the country to study abroad (Ministry …
The Temporal Experience of Chinese Students Abroad and the Present Human Condition
This article examines the experiences of Chinese elite university students abroad through the lens of temporality. In the struggle to get ahead, elite students are expected to carefully deploy their time. Studying abroad, it is argued, has become one more step in a culturally idealised temporal arrangement of how one is expected to go about advancing. The downside to this ethics of striving is shown to be a pervasive sense of restlessness ([Formu…

Purity and Corruption: Chinese Communist Party Applicants and the Problem of Evil
In contemporary China, university students play a key ideological role as the future vanguard of the nation and for this reason they are intensely courted by the Chinese Communist Party. This article addresses the moral ambiguities of this courtship for students, who face the paradox that while the party centre and collectivist authoritarian ideology invariably claims moral superiority, individual party cadres are frequently exposed as morally co…
Learning the knacks of actually existing capitalism: Young Beijing migrants and the problem of value
Chinese migrant workers make up the key manual workforce of global capitalist production, but they are barely integrated into either Chinese state narratives or global capitalism's self-representation. In Chinese they are known as the floating population because they dwell outside the modernist state grid and remain largely unrecognised by the state. This article addresses the labour experiences and developmental aspirations of young Beijing migr…
Past and present pasts: Historical labours in modern China
Ideological and practical concerns inform the shaping of collective memory in present historical labours, but the legacy of narratives inherited from earlier generations also produce certain restrictions on how history may be envisioned and transmitted in the present. In this article I trace the labour of historical forgetting, invention and remembrance performed in modern China by the May Fourth Movement and the Chinese Communist Party, addressi…
