Eruptions of the Sacred in a South Indian Fishing Village
Eliade invented the term ‘hierophany’ to refer to a physical manifestation of the sacred. For Eliade, all hierophanies are prefigurations of the one great manifestation, the incarnation of Christ. One can dispense with this limiting feature, and instead make use of Eliade’s more tractable theory—namely, that hierophanies are composite structures, made up of elements in contradiction with each other. Here, the hierophany to be examined is a ‘snake…
Automated Monsters of Vengeance
Monsters that act “automatically,” without thought or conscious awareness, constitute a category whose primary exemplar in American culture is the zombie. However, automaticity can be found in other realizations of the monstrous, including in ancient Greece and contemporary India. This paper compares the two. In Greece, the beings known as Eryines hunt and attack people who are guilty of crimes against members of their own kin group. One of the b…
Making the World Safe for Patriarchy
Both Donald Trump in the White House and zombies in American fiction, movie, and television serials, highlight changes in American social structures, especially marriage and childbirth. Instead of a critique of such structures, however, the zombie genre largely reinforces traditional norms. To be sure, Trump himself is not a zombie, although his followers are often represented the living dead in American political cartoons. What is the connection…
Siblings and Spouses in the Context of Culture
In South India, siblings are more important than spouses, and the question of marital quality turns on the nature of the relationship between brothers and sisters. Here we examine the implications of a “sociocentric” perspective that does not privilege, in the way Western “egocentric” systems usually do, measures of individual happiness and satisfaction. Instead, the emphasis is on maintaining the solidarity of larger kinship structures, which, i…

Ambivalence and Anxiety in the Psychiatric Systems of the United States and Japan
Obsessive-compulsive disorder and the Japanese condition known as taijin kyofusho are classified as 'anxiety disorders' by US and Japanese psychiatrists. While members of the biomedical community might prefer to see this as evidence of a human universal, the similarity between the two is not primarily biological, but cultural and developmental. Both disorders develop out of a conflict between or within cultural significant values, values that ref…
Fathers and daughters in a south Indian goddess myth
Desire in kinship creates ambivalences which the kinship system itself does not resolve, and while this has been understood-especially with reference to the mother-son relationship in South Asia-little attention has focused on the relationship between father and daughter. The Jalari (a Telugu fishing caste) myth of the seven goddesses turns on the relationship between Shiva and his daughters. Alternately impeding and assisting each other, Shiva a…

Allocating value to gender in official American psychiatry, part I
Americans value ‘independence’ and ‘dependence’ as cultural norms, but find them difficult to reconcile because their competing normative demands pull in opposite directions. There are a variety of responses to the dialectic thus generated. One is by allocating the values of independence and dependence to men and women respectively, then by essentialising them as inherent dispositions which psychiatric categories ostensibly name but do not create…

Motivation and the Will to Power
Like the concept "structure" a generation ago, "power" now figures prominently in the anthropological understanding of human action. This essay attempts to locate the concept of power in the cultural history of Anglo-Saxon political discourse. Discussion focuses on a specific domain of inquiry—"ethnopsychology"— and on one of the texts recognized as exemplary of that domain, Lutz's Unnatural Emotions. In a field largely concerned with matters of …

Becoming a Possession-Medium in South India
Possession-mediumship, the expected possession of a specialist by a spirit for the purpose of soliciting knowledge and assistance, is a form of divination which occupies an important place in the ethnomedical traditions of village South Asia. This article examines the institution and practitioners of possession-mediumship in the vicinity of a Jalari (Telugu fishing caste) village in coastal southeastern India. The practitioners include two Jalari…

The Durbar Incident
Here I apply a theory of 'political displacement' to the study of an incident that took place at King George V's investiture as 'King-Emperor' of India at the 'Delhi Durbar' on December 12, 1911. By 'political displacement' I mean the shifting of political attention from one domain to another, or from one idiom to another, where problems emergent but unresolvable in the first are dealt with by conversion into the second. My purposes are these: Fi…

Divergent Ontologies of Suffering in South Asia
