The Changing Role of Natives in the Exploration of Canada
Introduction After the French had built their first permanent settlements on the east coast of Canada, Ste. Croix (1604), Port Royal (1605) and Quebec (1608), it took them only until 1681 to explore and roughly map the shores of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. This was an astonishing achievement considering that the first Dutch and Englishmen did not even see Lake Ontario until 1685. Conventional wisdom gives one …

A nutritional analysis of the food rations Martin Frobisher's second expedition, 1577
A list of the provisions for the second expedition led by Martin Frobisher was produced on 26 March 1577, for 115 men and 18 months. These plans contain an extraordinarily detailed food procurement list: the quantity of each food, the cost of each item, and how the rations were to be allocated. The subject of this paper is a nutritional analysis of the rations on this list. It is assumed that the March list is simply an 18-month version of what w…
An Analysis of the 17-th Century Map 'Novvelle France
This paper presents an analysis of the manuscript map 'Novvelle France' now located at the Ministry of Defence, Taunton, England. It is one of the few maps of New France that depicts the growth of geographical knowledge between the publication of Champlain's last map (1632) and those of Nicolas Sanson (1650–57), and it is the earliest surviving map on which an attempt was made to give the locations of native groups. As such, the map is an importa…

Mapping The Great Lakes / The Period Of Imperial Rivalries, 1700−1760
The period under study can be subdivided by the first appearance of Bellin's maps in 1743. Prior to that date, most printed maps were based on the cartography of De l'Isle and Lahontan whose sources of information were derived from material drafted late in the seventeenth century. The manuscript mapping of the first forty years of the eighteenth century treated the peripheral and older settled areas in greater detail than in the previous century.…
Mapping The Great Lakes / The Period Of Exploration, 1603–1700
The exploration and mapping of the Great Lakes began with the work of Champlain and continued to the late 1680s. By the end of that decade the lakes and surrounding drainage basin had been explored and mapped in at least manuscript form. Towards the end of the century the manuscript maps had been assembled and disseminated in printed form. This paper is a review of most of the maps that were produced during the 17th century and the manner in whic…
A Critical Analysis of the Northpart of America, a Facsimile Atlas of Early Canadian Maps
The Northpart of America is the first broad study of early printed maps of Canada. Through a discussion of 46 maps, the authors illustrate the exploration of the country, the science and art of map reproduction, maps as attractive illustrations, and the principles of carto-bibliography. Each map is accompanied by a text which discusses the significance of the map. Although the reviewers have some reservations about the book, in particular the sel…
The Two States of Champlain's Carte Geographique
The paper is concerned with two states of the Carte geographique puhlished by Samuel de Champlain in his Voyages (Paris 1613). After examining ten copies of the hook, five with a dated state and five with an undated state, the author suggests that the plate for both states was prepared in 1612. Shortly thereafter, a number of copies of the map were printed. Late in 1613, the plate was altered and dated, and another set of maps was printed. A lege…

Measures of Distance Employed on 17th and Early 18th Century Maps of Canada
The paper is a discussion of the many measures of distance commonly found on 17th century maps of Canada. Firstly, the measures are compared to each other in terms of commonly held notions about the length of a meridional degree. Secondly, an effort is made to ascertain the absolute length of the 17th century measures in terms of modern measures. Finally, some suggestions are made on how to ascertain the scale of a map and how to make scholarly u…

Maps Relating to the First Half of the 17th Century and Their Use in Determining the Location of Jesuit Missions in Huronia
The aim of this study is twofold; firstly, to discuss all known maps relevant to Southern Ontario, and specifically to Huronia in northern Simcoe County, between the years 1615 and 1660; and secondly, to use these maps and other primary source material to reconstruct the distribution of Indian villages and Catholic missions as they were in Huronia during the first half of the 17th century. All previous attempts at such a study have been based on …
