    Open Access•Helen Durham•ARTICLE•International Review of the Red…•2021

As in the past, terrorism is a live threat in today's worldand one that causes immeasurable human suffering. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) unequivocally condemns terrorism of all forms, no matter the perpetrator and no matter whether it occurs during or outside of armed conflict.Without exception, terrorism runs counter to the principle of humanity and fundamentally undermines efforts to make the world a safer place for its c…

  • Patterns of Dissent in Britain during the First World War

    Cyril Pearce, Helen Durham•ARTICLE•War & Society•2015

The purpose of this work is to suggest new ways of identifying those communities in which opposition to Britain’s involvement in the First World War was most marked. The principal indicators used here are conscientious objectors (COs). It will be argued that existing calculations of their numbers are unreliable and that conclusions based on those calculations are, therefore, unsafe. A new approach using the newly compiled Pearce Register of Briti…

  • The dialogue of difference

    Open Access•Helen Durham, Katie O’Byrne•ARTICLE•International Review of the Red…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This article examines the meaning and potential usefulness of a ‘gender perspective’ on international humanitarian law (IHL). In order to do so, it considers a number of ‘gendered’ themes found within IHL, including the role of women as combatants, and the gendered use of sexual violence during times of armed conflict. The authors suggest that further development and understanding of a gender perspective will contribute to the resilience and effe…

Helen Durham, Tracey Gurd•EDITOR•BOOK•Listening to the Silences: Women…•2005

Challenging the perception that women are exclusively the victims, the caregivers or the passive supporters of men in times of armed conflict, Listening to the Silences: Women and War exposes the reader to a diversity of women’s voices. These voices, both personal and academic, demonstrate that women are increasingly taking on less ‘traditional’ roles during war, and that these roles are multifaceted, complicated and sometimes contradictory. The …

This paper describes the online learning and teaching resources that are currently being developed for the contemporary and historical UK censuses as part of a project that is being funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) to support its ‘Information Environment’. The online resources are intended to support learners and teachers in the UK Higher and Further Education sectors who are interested in UK census data. A variety of reso…

  • Women, armed conflict and international law

    Open Access•Helen Durham•ARTICLE•International Review of the Red…•2002•Cited by: 1

“IHL takes a particular male perspective on armed conflict, as a norm against which to measure equality. In a world where women are not equals of men, and armed conflict impacts upon men and women in a fundamentally different way, a general category of rules that is not inclusive of the reality for women cannot respond to their situation.”
