  • Multiproduct Firms, Horizontal Mergers, and International Trade

Jackie M L Chan, Michael Irlacher et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

Acquirers and targets in horizontal mergers are typically multiproduct firms that often sell the same core product. How do mergers affect these multiproduct firms? Using Danish data, we establish empirically that the combined domestic product scope of the acquirer and target falls after a merger, and sales of the acquirer become more concentrated towards the core product. Moreover, the acquirer exports more products to more destinations that are …

  • Working from Home, Wages, and Regional Inequality in the Light of Covid-19

Michael Irlacher, Michael Koch•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2021

We use the most recent wave of the German Qualifications and Career Survey to reveal a substantial wage premium in a Mincer regression for workers performing their job from home. The premium accounts for more than 10% and persists within narrowly defined jobs as well as after controlling for workplace characteristics. In a next step, we provide evidence on substantial regional variation in the share of jobs that can be done from home in Germany. …

  • Robots and Firms

Open Access•Michael Koch, Ilya Manuylov et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2021•Cited by: 27

We study the microeconomic implications of robot adoption using a rich panel data set of Spanish manufacturing firms over a 27-year period (1990–2016). We provide causal evidence on two central questions: (1) Which firm characteristics prompt firms to adopt robots? (2) What is the impact of robots on adopting firms relative to non-adopting firms? To address these questions, we look at our data through the lens of recent attempts in the literature…

  • Situating architectural performance: ‘Star architecture’ and its roles in repositioning the cities of Graz, Lucerne and Wolfsburg

Nadia Alaily-Mattar, Dominik Bartmanski et al.•ARTICLE•European Planning Studies•2018

Since the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in 1997, the topic of how ‘star architecture’ plays a decisive role in urban regeneration has been discussed in academic debates as well as in the media. Efforts to emulate the so-called Bilbao effect followed internationally. However, not every city that commissions the design of a public cultural building to a star architect seeks to replicate that effect. This overarching narrative has never…

  • Critical Junctures and Conditions of Change: Exploring the Fall of Prison Populations in US States

    Open Access•Susanne Karstedt, Tiffany Bergin et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 9

State prison populations in the United States have been regularly declining since 2009, and, at the end of 2014, the combined federal and state prison population was at its lowest level since 2005. Criminologists were caught by surprise by this development in the country that epitomized contemporary ‘mass incarceration’. Their theoretical accounts were steeped in a ‘punitive worldview’ that left no space for the stabilization and eventual decline…

  • Social Cohesion and Its Correlates: A Comparison of Western and Asian Societies

    Open Access•Jan Delhey, K Boehnke et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2018•Cited by: 25•References: 32

Trust can either be conceived of as a social glue in its own right, or as a constitutive element of a larger societal syndrome, termed social cohesion. This contribution takes the latter perspective, analyzing social trust and trust in institutions as integral parts of social cohesion more generally. Despite ongoing worries about the state of social cohesion in contemporary societies, surprisingly little is known as to which macro-level condition…

Open Access•Michael Koch, Dickson Andrew Kehop et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 39

Documentation of consistent plant use argues for efficacy and is particularly important since established and effective herbal medicinal interventions are sorely needed in the rural areas of PNG, and unfortunately clinical validation for the same is often lacking. Despite the existence of a large corpus of medical annotation of plants for PNG, previously unknown medical uses of plants can be uncovered. Furthermore, comparisons of medicinal plant …

  • Rilke's Early Angels’ Connections to Corporeality and Language

    Open Access•Michael Koch, Michael L Koch•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2012

Faith in and fascination with angels have been on the rise in popular culture in Germany. Rainer Maria Rilke's poetry is frequently mentioned in connection with these supposedly divine beings, which perpetuates a conflation of Rilke's works with spirituality and transcendence among the broad population. Various media outlets in Germany reinforce this connection in time for Christmas each year. Rilke's angel figure is, however, not exclusively or …

Background The Eastern Highlands area of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a rich tradition of medicinal plant use. However, rapid modernization is resulting in the loss of independent language traditions and consequently a loss of individuals knowledgeable in medicinal plant use. This report represents a program to document and preserve traditional knowledge concerning medicinal plant use in PNG. This report documents and compares traditional plant use…

This article explores the interactive effects of the economy and the use of force on incumbent parties’ electoral performance. Research on the diversionary use of force assumes that leaders (especially democratic leaders) use force abroad to bolster their domestic political fortunes during hard economic times. But other research suggests that crises either lead to removal from office or have no effect on incumbents’ political fortunes. Although a…

    Open Access•Michael Koch, Michael T Koch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2005•Cited by: 25•References: 46

Electoral institutions influence legislators’ constituency size and makeup and, as a result, affect the lens that representatives look through to assess the costs of military conflict. Given the uneven distribution of casualties during a conflict, the costs of international violence vary between constituencies and thus affect representatives differently. The authors develop a constituency-based theory of legislator accountability and legislature …

Algunas ubicaciones form…
