  • Rural migration under climate and land systems change

  • Exploring linkages between protected-area access and Kenyan pastoralist food security using a new agent-based model

    Open Access•Rekha Warrier, Randall B Boone et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2024

Pastoral communities living in the arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya raise livestock herds within highly patchy environments, and experience chronic food insecurity and inter-ethnic conflicts linked to resource access. For these primarily rural communities, livestock are a source of calories and income and are therefore crucial to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) associated with food security (SDG 2). Achieving s…

  • Drought frequency, conservancies, and pastoral household well-being

    Open Access•Randall B Boone, Randall Boone et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2024

Portions of group ranches of northern Kenya communally held by pastoralists have been removed from grazing to support wildlife and encourage tourism and the resources that follow. These community-based conservancies (CBCs) were designed to benefit CBC members through regular payments, potential for wages, improved security, etc. We used a coupled-systems simulation approach to quantify potential changes in livestock numbers and pastoral well-bein…

  • Climate change, moose, and subsistence harvest

    Open Access•Jiake Zhou, Gary P Kofinas et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2022

Assessing the impact of a rapidly warming climate on subsistence-based livelihoods in the Arctic is critical for building resilience for rural communities. We used a social-ecological system (SES) framework to evaluate the possible range of changes in moose abundance, distribution, and harvesting for Nuiqsut, a small native community in northern Alaska. Our results indicate that within the area used for hunting by the village, moose (Alces alces)…

  • Global rangeland production systems and livelihoods at threat under climate change and variability

Open Access•Cécile Godde, Randall B Boone et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Rangelands are one of the Earth’s major ice-free land cover types. They provide food and support livelihoods for millions of people in addition to delivering important ecosystems services. However, rangelands are at threat from climate change, although the extent and magnitude of the potential impacts are poorly understood. Any declines in vegetation biomass and fluctuations in grazing availability would be of concern for food production and ecos…

  • An integrated community and ecosystem-based approach to disaster risk reduction in mountain systems

  • Which Way Forward? Using simulation models and ethnography to understand changing livelihoods among Kenyan pastoralists in a “new commons”

    Open Access•Carolyn Lesorogol, Randall B Boone•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2016•Citada por: 3

Over the last several decades there has been a transformation of the Samburu pastoral commons to new forms of land tenure and use. Government led land adjudication in the 1970s and 1980s established new forms of land ownership including group ranches and, in some places, complete privatization of land into individual parcels. An important question is what forms of land use and social relations emerge in the wake of land adjudication, and with wha…

  • Nutritional Status of Maasai Pastoralists under Change

    Open Access•Kathleen A Galvin, Kathleen Galvin et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2015•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 46

This study assesses the nutritional status of Maasai pastoralists living in a period of great social, economic and ecological changes in Kajiado County, southern Kenya. Data on weight, height, skinfolds, and circumferences were collected from 534 individuals in the year 2000. The data were used to describe mean differences in human nutrition between ages, sexes, and within and among three Group Ranches. Nutritional data and diet recall data were …

  • The Cost for Agriculture to Coexist With Wildlife in Colorado

    Dana L Hoag, Dana L K Hoag et al.•ARTICLE•Human Dimensions of Wildlife•2011

This study estimated costs incurred by agricultural producers to coexist with wildlife in Colorado, where there is little data, and demonstrates that secondary data sources can provide reliable estimates. Three secondary sources were used: government expenditures, spatial data (e.g., geographic information systems), and published studies. Results showed that secondary data provide comparable estimates to more expensive and time consuming surveys.…
