What is this thing called narrative? A cognitive-semiotic perspective
Taking a cognitive-semiotic perspective, my aim, in this paper, is to analyze narrative as a species of the genus semiosis and to contribute, by so doing, to our insight in the complex structure(s) of narrative sense-making – more specifically in its reflexive, imaginative, and linguistic dimensions. It will be argued that a theory of semiosis allows us to systematically relate definitions of narrative that cover different aspects and dimensions …
Making sense of experience
In 1934, Jan Mukařovský stated that ‘art is a semiotic fact’. This statement raised two issues that haven’t as yet been satisfactorily dealt with. The first concerns the nature of the sign : what, and when is a sign? The second relates to the consequences, for the humanities, of the semiotic nature of its object. While the focus is on literature, this paper aims at tackling both issues, thus contributing to a scientific semiotics of culture and l…
Semiotic cognition and the logic of culture
In this paper I argue that semiotic cognition is a distinctive form of cognition, which must have evolved out of earlier forms of non-semiotic cognition. Semiotic cognition depends on the use of signs. Signs are understood in terms of a specific organization, or structure, of the cognitive process. Semiotic cognition is a unique form of cognition. Once this form of cognition was available to humans, the semiotic provided the ground structure for …
Semiosis, art, and literature
The ‘state of literature’ in a visual culture is analyzed against the background of a theoretical semiotic framework based upon the distinction between three types of signs: one-place images , two-place symbols , and three-place structures . It is argued that literature is linguistic mimetic meta-representation . The semiotic perspective allows us to deal, in a productive way, with a number of key issues in literary theory (such as ‘literariness,…

The emergence of difference
Semiotics and Information Psychology
In both information science (e.g. learning, networks and interface design) and management science (e.g. knowledge creation and knowledge management) psychology and semiotics are almost absent. In this paper we take this observation as a starting point. From a psychological perspective we will discuss what is missing in the sciences of management and information, and, as a consequence, how this absence could be explained. Then, we do the same from…
Semiotics of the user interface
