Hegel and Heidegger on the Phenomenology of Conscience
In this essay, I explore possibilities for phenomenology beyond Hegel with respect to questions of conscience, guilt, and ethics. In the first section, I briefly introduce Heidegger’s phenomenology. The next section provides an interpretation of conscience in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit . Like Hegel, Heidegger claims that conscience states my guilt prior to any specific wrongdoings; Heidegger’s ideas around the ‘call of conscience’ are thus c…
Being Touched from the Inside: Pregnancy as Paradox and Paradigm
By exploring the phenomenology of being touched from the inside with the help of Merleau-Ponty, Derrida and others, this essay argues that pregnancy is paradoxical and paradigmatic. The paradox consists in having a body inside a body when I normally experience my body as just mine. The paradigm is to realise that as finite beings, having a body means having always already been touched by others. While pregnancy is the experience of having the oth…
Salut to Jean-Luc Nancy

The Permanent Truth of Hedonist Moralities”: Plato and Levinas on Pleasures
Levinas maintains that there is a lasting significance to hedonism if we consider the important role of pleasures for our embodied existence. In this essay, we go back to Plato to explore the nature of pleasure, different kinds of pleasures, and their contribution to the good life. The good life is a considerate mixture of pleasures which requires knowing, understanding and remembering. Pleasures take us to the most basic level of existence which…
Worlds in Motion: Temporality and Historicality
Worlds are always in motion; what kind of movement is at stake? In this essay, I will argue that Heidegger moves beyond Hegel by making the concept of world central to phenomenology. But how do worlds move? As history, Heidegger says; yet his initial attempt to interpret history, in the final sections of Being and Time, is at certain moments hampered by his attempt to ground the historicality of shared world in the temporality of individual Dasei…
The Possibility of a Phenomenology of Cultural Worlds in Hegel and Husserl
The world we live in proves best understood as a cultural world. Cultural worlds are examined in this article regarding their aesthetic and ethical dimensions, with the help of Hegel and Husserl. The ethical realm is characterized by a tension between ethical conscience and cultural norms. Even Hegel, who is often conceived as a philosopher of customs, explores the significance of conscience in a detailed phenomenology. Husserl provides a curious…
Between Platonic Love and Internet Pornography
The article sets out to show how an holistic approach in matters of sexuality is always more helpful than one-sided approaches. On the issue of internet pornography, the authors suggest that the recent anti-masturbation online movement ‘no fapping’ is based on wrong conclusions from insufficient evidence. We suggest that a holistic approach is called for, with emphasis on the embodied human. Abstinence or what is understood by ‘Platonic love’ is …

In this short study, we would like to investigate the spatial layout of the courtroom in three national contexts: German, US-American, and Russian. The thesis that stands behind this project claims
Unambiguous Calling? Authenticity and Ethics in Heidegger's Being and Time
In Unambiguous Calling? Authenticity and Ethics in Heidegger's Being and Time, Tanja Staeler revisits the concept of authenticity in order to investigate several assumptions often taken for granted in secondary literature. She argues that the distinction between authenticity and inauthenticity should be read as a methodological and, more precisely, phenomenological distinction. Showing that authenticity cannot really be understood as a state one …
