  • Fear of the Martians: On Slavoj Žižek's Uses of Argument

    Open Access•Henk De Berg•ARTICLE•Paragraph•2015•References: 1

This article offers a critical examination of the arguments that underpin Slavoj Žižek's political utopianism. It maintains (1) that Žižek's rejection of liberal democracy and market capitalism is sustained by highly problematical rhetorical strategies and (2) that his purportedly Marxist plea for a new social order is based on an essentially Romantic, more specifically Nietzschean, conception of modern man's existential predicament

  • Freud's Theory and Its Use in Literary and Cultural Studies: An Introduction

Thomas Paul Bonfiglio, Henk De Berg•ARTICLE•German Studies Review•2004

Few figures have had as much influence on Western thought as Sigmund Freud. His ideas permeate our culture to such a degree that an understanding of them is indispensable. Yet many otherwise well-informed students in the humanities labor under misconceptions about Freudian theory. There are countless introductions to Freudian psychoanalysis but, surprisingly, none that combine a genuinely accessible account of Freud's ideas with an introduction t…

  • A Systems Theoretical Perspective on Communication

    Henk De Berg•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•1995•Cited by: 1

This essay asserts that it is impossible to understand any communica- tive utterance outside the context in which it is uttered. Within this context, I expound a conception of communication based on ideas in information theory and on Niklas Luhmann's systems theory, which provides a theoretical founda- tion for the context dependency of utterances. At the same time, I introduce readers to Luhmann's version of systems theory, which is becoming mor…

  • Select Annotated Bibliography to Luhmann's Systems Theory and Its Applications in Literary Studies

    Henk De Berg•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•1995•Cited by: 1

Luhmann has written more than forty books and three-hundred-odd articles, so the choice presented below is highly selective. The emphasis is on works that have specific relevance to literary and communication studies. Biographical Note Niklas Luhmann was born in Lfineburg in 1927. After studying law in Freiburg, he became a civil servant. In 1960 he obtained a year's leave of absence to study at Harvard under Talcott Parsons, who strongly influen…
