A review of the major developments and trends in psychosomatic medicine during the last 5 years is presented. A similar review covering the preceding 2 decades is briefly summarized and used as a frame of reference for the analysis. This survey is largely confined to papers published in PSYCHOSOMATIC MEDICINE. Emotional Settings of Functional Amenorrhea
The psychological and physiological aspects of functional amenorrhea are surveyed, the literature is briefly reviewed, and 6 cases are presented to illustrate different aspects of the problem. Psychophysiological Studies in Thyroid Function
In 71 psychiatric patients thyroid function was investigated, using as an index of hormonal secretion the biological decay in I131 in the gland over a 3- to 4-week period. No correlation was found between the activity of the gland and the degree of anxiety. The following findings were obtained: Two-thirds of the patients studied stated spontaneously that they missed parental, especially maternal, affection as children.
