Attention and Disordered Eating Behavior
The Slade model for development of anorexia nervosa proposes that the female may seek success and control in her life by pursuing a thin body through dieting when faced with serious personal problems. Extending upon this model, the present program of research has sought to identify those characteristics of women generally at-risk for anorexia nervosa that would make dieting behavior especially successful, permitting the progression from food rest…

Distorted Body Image as a Risk Factor in Anorexia Nervosa
This study replicated the results of an earlier one in which college women showing psychological similarities to anorexics indicated an unrealistically larger body-image relative to controls but only if they were relatively thin. This kind of perceptual enhancement was not found when inanimate objects were rated. The proposal that an enhanced body image plays a dynamic role in motivating food restraint (and may increase the risk of becoming anore…
The Female Role and Menstrual Distress
Numerous studies of either sex role behavior (masculinity/femininity) or women's role attitudes (contemporary/traditional) as related to menstrual distress have amassed inconsistent and contradictory results. It was proposed that these two role variables may hold an interactive relationship with menstrual distress, and their study in isolation may have provoked less reliable results. An interaction was found with masculine women preferring a cont…
Type A, Locus of Control, and Stress
It has been recommended that a stress measure be included in studies seeking to clarify the Type A behavior pattern to identify moderator effects. This was tested, and a stress-moderating effect of externality among Type As was found along with the absence of relation between Type A status and locus of control
Sex role correlates of stress-prone type a behavior in college students
Antisociality and Dangerousness in Women before and after the Women's Movement
Women committing crimes before the surge of feminism (1965–1971) and long after this movement attracted national attention (1980–1985) were sampled. Greater antisociality in female criminals during the prefeminist period was associated with more dangerous crime, but predictability was lost by 1980–1985. It was suggested that rejection of role expectations inspired by feminism may have altered the determinants of dangerous crime in women
Personality underlying motivation for type A behavior in late adolescents
Erotic value of female distress in sexually explicit photographs
The extent to which distress of the female model contributed to the erotic value of sexually explicit photographs of women in bondage was studied for a sample of 54 young-adult college males. In addition, subjects were categorized by level of antisociality and level of facial-decoding skill with the prediction that the erotic value of a model in distress would be greatest for subjects departing most from social values (antisociality) and most cap…
Psychological defences and menstrual distress
Two studies considered the possible role of psychological defences and defensive awareness in the distress reported by women during the menstrual (flow) period and during the week before menstruation. Unconscious rationalization was associated with the least distress at both times among college women. The same defensive pattern also was found to be related to less menstrual and premenstrual distress among women reporting the symptoms of premenstr…
The second androgyny
Type a Behavior, Cognitive Defense, and Stress
This study considered the possible moderator effects of three cognitive variables—repression, awareness of defense, and breadth of scanning—upon the relationship between Type A behavior and stress. Type A college subjects of both sexes did not report significantly more stress than Type B students. However, (1) repression, (2) lack of awareness, and (3) narrow scanning served moderator roles for Type A subjects; each, considered singly or in combi…
Sex Differences in the Adaptive Value of Androgyny
Androgynous blending of masculine and feminine behaviors was found to be positively related to androgynous sex-typing in 47 college women but not in 45 college men. However, of the two forms of androgyny, only blending was inversely related to stress in women; neither held functional significance for men

The role of sadism and peer pressure in the sexual aggression of male college students
Two types of motivational models help explain sexual aggression in college men. Socialization models emphasize imperatives of the male sex role, whereas a sadistic model focuses on increased sexual stimulation from female distress. These models were evaluated by comparing the relationship between a measure of sexual sadism and the frequency of sexually aggressive episodes with the relationship between peer pressure for sexual intimacy and sexual …
Psychological vulnerability to alcoholism
Three studies considered the predispositional role of impaired internal scanning in alcoholism. Scanning represents the person's sensitivity to internal stimulation and the extent to which the person utilizes internally generated information. The first study found that more acute alcoholic patients displayed poorer scanning than more chronic alcoholics. This finding contra‐indicates deficit scanning as an effect of alcoholism and suggests that th…
Awareness of cognitive defences and stress management
There is considerable disagreement regarding whether defences operate unconsciouly, represent deliberate styles of coping with problems, or fall somewhere between. The present study considered the role of awareness in mediating the relation between defence and stress by establishing whether the conscious or unconscious nature of a given defence was associated with a distinct level of stress. The results for projection and rationalization confirme…
Cognitive Defenses and Life Stress
Lazarus proposed that defensive behaviors may be detrimental to long-term stress management to the extent that they interfere with direct stress-coping strategies. Two studies considered this proposal for four cognitive defenses—projection, repression, rationalization, and denial—as well as the role of internal scanning as a moderator variable. Projection and denial were positively related to stress level over a 1-yr. period supporting the Lazaru…
Cost-Effectiveness of College Achievement by Androgynous Men and Women
Androgynous college women ( n = 20) were superior in academic achievement to nonandrogynous women ( n = 20), and the better achievement was not associated with excessive stress. There was no achievement difference between androgynous ( n = 15) and nonandrogynous ( n = 16) men

Prediction of Continuing Client Contact in a Brief-Treatment Campus Mental Health Agency
The ability of the Counseling Readiness Scales to predict the number of sessions spent in short-term counseling or brief psychotherapy within a university mental health service was confirmed. Highly ready clients spent more time in both than those low on readiness. Significant positive correlations between number of sessions and rated improvement of clients within both short-term modes of treatment suggest the practical utility of measurement of …

Sex-Role Identity and Achievement Motivation
The hypothesis tested in this study was that the social role demands of college and feminine sex-typed roles were to some extent incompatible and that this resulted in sex-role confusion among college females and among males with a more feminine identification. Two samples of male and female undergraduates were tested on measures of social value-social behavior consistency, i.e., the measure of role confusion, and identification. It was found tha…

Anxiety Correlates of Sex-Role Identity in College Students
The relationships between sex-role adoption, aggression anxiety (AA), and manifest anxiety (MA) were determined by using questionnaire data from 85 college males and 156 college females. Significant negative rs were obtained between masculinity and both anxiety variables which, in turn, were positively correlated. The MF-AA findings were similar to those reported for 12-yr.-old children
Conformity to Masculinity-Femininity Stereotypes and Ego Identity in Adolescents
Erikson's theory of ego identity was explored by relating a masculinity-femininity measure to perceived social role consistency (RC), one criterion of identity. Male adolescents whose behaviors tended to conform to cultural stereotypes of masculinity showed higher RC than less masculine males. This was consistent with the hypothesis that social reward for conformity should tend to strengthen interpersonal habits, whereas social punishment for non…

Maternal Childrearing Control History and Subsequent Cognitive and Personality Functioning of the Offspring
Perceived maternal childrearing practices were related to concept formation performance obtained under conditions involving negative social reinforcement. College girls reporting low control-low nurturant (“ignoring” partern) or high control-low nurturant (“rejecting” pattern) childrearing histories were conceptually inferior to those whose mothers were perceived as low control-high nurturant (“accepting” pattern). Personality differences among c…
