Racial Oppression, Colonization, and Identity
The most powerful tool in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. — Steve Biko (1946–1977), speech given in Cape Town, 1971 OVERVIEW. The psychological experiences of people of African heritage have been shaped and influenced by the enduring legacy of European colonization and the Atlantic slave trade. As such, counselors who seek to promote health and healing for Africans and those impacted by the African Diaspora need to unders…

Socio‐genealogical connectedness, attachment theory, and childcare practice
At the heart of child welfare policy and practice are issues of loss and separation, issues of loss and discontinuity of parent–child or carer–child ties. Consequently, John Bowlby’s ideas concerning attachment have been influential in this field over the past 50 years. This paper argues that the society in which Bowlby originally developed his ideas has altered greatly; in Western societies, family dynamics have changed remarkably, and continue …
Shifting Whispering Stands
Pornography and the paedophile
There are few case‐study‐based reports of the role of pornography in the lives of sex offenders in contrast with numerous studies of a survey and statistical nature. Very little is known about the ways in which offenders process pornographic and other erotic materials as part of their offending patterns. The research reported in this study was based on case studies of fixated paedophiles in a private clinic for sex offenders. The men were intervi…
The Pragmatics of Institutional Racism
The modern arguments about the apparent emergence of a "new"racism are noted and discussed. While this "new" racism refers to forms of racist talk which lack the crude bigotry often associated with racism, there seems to be an inconsistency between concern about such a development and the recorded levels of crude racism in the community as evidenced by racial attacks and harassment as well as indicators of racial inequality. Research into respons…
Situational and Victims' Characteristics in Simulated Penal Judgments
Two hypotheses were tested: that ratings of appropriate prison sentences would be increased by the vulnerability of the victim, and that these ratings would be increased by the extent to which the victim was responsible for the crime. For 90 introductory social psychology students as subjects the first hypothesis was supported, but the second hypothesis rejected since a marginally significant effect was found in the direction opposite to the one …

A Subcultural Account of Media Effects
Most laboratory and field studies into media effect have focussed on aggressive drive or attitude. Overall, their results suggest that a relationship exists between media violence and personal aggression -though the findings are by no means clear-cut. In contrast to this assessment, the present paper asserts that the mass media exert no proven influence at all. Reinterpreting previous work and discussing the findings of new research, we argue tha…
Audience Perceptions of Violent Television Content
This article places emphasis on the content analysis of British television programs by the respondents in a sample survey. Though exploratory in nature, it offers a challenge to the traditional imposition of a priori content categories on program material. The authors provide each respondent with a subset of the 37 programs being examined and ask for a rating scale evaluation of the programs across 50 potential program attributes. These attribute…
