The Chinese -Think Brain Health community intervention for dementia prevention in the UK
People from different ethnic minorities in the UK are experiencing a steeper increase in dementia diagnosis compared to their white counterparts but are more likely to have a higher risk of dementia, to be diagnosed at a younger age and to die earlier from the condition. These disparities suggest the need for urgent interventions to prevent and reduce dementia risk. Despite the significant presence of Chinese people in the UK, there has been litt…
The Content of Nostalgic Memories Among People Living with Dementia
Although dementia may affect the reliability of autobiographical memories, the psychological properties of nostalgic memories may be preserved. We compared the content of nostalgic ( n = 36) and ordinary ( n = 31) narratives of 67 participants living with dementia. Narratives were rated according to their self-oriented, social, and existential properties, as well as their affective content. Social properties and affective content were assessed us…
The Development and Validation of the Threat of Dementia Scale
Dementia represents a substantial threat to the self. However, to date, there is no reliable way to measure how threatened people feel by dementia. This article reports on two online studies. In Study 1, 248 participants rated statements about dementia according to their threat to well-being. In Study 2, 99 participants (all students at the University of the West of England) completed the emerging scale (the Threat of Dementia Scale or ToDS). We …
Dementia services for people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and White‐British communities
This study set out to investigate whether there were disparities in service provision for people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities compared to White British (WB) communities within a primary care led dementia service in the UK. Data were extracted from 30 cases from three BAME (African-Caribbean, South Asian and Chinese) communities who had been referred to a dementia service between April 2016 and December 2017. We then ex…
Mental health and identity
This paper is based on interviews with users of a drop‐in centre run by a voluntary group. Using a grounded theory approach the paper argues that individuals' use of the drop‐in is linked to the discursive strategies that they have developed to cope with stigma. Tajfel's Social Identity Theory is employed as a framework to examine how users manage the threat to their identity posed by the diagnosis and experience of mental illness. The implicatio…
Brains, minds and selves
Until the last 10 years or so, dementia research had been dominated by the psychiatric or medical approach to dementia. However, increasing numbers of new psychological and social psychological approaches to dementia have begun to emerge. Consequently, there has been a significant change in the descriptions of the losses involved in the dementing process: from being represented in terms of brain functioning, they have become repositioned as occur…
Psychotherapeutic work with people with dementia
Until recently, psychotherapy and counselling techniques have rarely been used with people with dementia. However, the change in emphasis within dementia care towards a person‐centred approach has meant that there is a growing clinical interest in their use. This paper reviews the published literature in this area which bears on psychotherapy assessment, intervention and evaluation. Although there is a developing clinical literature on interventi…
Inhabitants of a Lost Kingdom
Current concepts of dementia often act to exclude the internal world of the dementia sufferer from consideration as a valid object of study. This paper presents a three stage model of the subjective world of dementia sufferers, drawing on ideas from both clinical and social psychology. The first stage involves the feelings engendered by the process of dementia and includes at least four discrete states: anxiety; depression; grief; and despair/ter…
The Accounts of Special Education Leavers
There has been comparatively little analysis of the ways in which pupils within special education describe themselves. This paper looks at the linguistic repertoires that leavers from special education in Central Scotland drew upon in order to account for their presence in what was seen by those around them as a stigmatising environment. Eighteen special education leavers were interviewed: first of all either before or around the time that they l…
