Queer Representation in Mandarin Chinese Language Learning Textbooks of the United Kingdom
Application of a queer lens on a mixed methods framework. • Diverse spectra help in identifying minority gender and sexual identities. • MFL material largely reinforces the notion of cisgendered heteronormativity. • Representation is key in supporting the acceptance of sexual and gender identity. Honourable kāwanatanga
Understandings of Te Tiriti o Waitangi continue to unfold as we find our way through the complexities of colonial misinformation about our herstory and history. Looking ahead to the prospect of constitutional transformation, this paper examines honourable kāwanatanga as a necessary pathway to Tiriti justice. This commentary paper draws on existing literature and insights from the Māori and Tauiwi authors’ decades of experience of pursuing Tiriti …
The power struggle
Purpose: Historically, clinical reasoning has largely been considered from an empirical, biomedical standpoint. This epistemology, rooted in imperial rule, is influential in how healthcare practitioners practice. An empirical approach to healthcare often oversimplifies the complex nature of clinical reasoning by obscuring the influence of imperial ideologies on decision-making. This can perpetuate inequitable approaches to healthcare delivery whi…
Emerging Professional Identity Formation
This paper explores professional identity formation in undergraduate education. The paper positions professional identity formation within coloniality. A qualitative case study was conducted using critical theory as a guiding conceptual framework. Data collection included document reviews, observations and arts-based research methodologies. We present a case study of a speech-language pathology student, Aqueelah, transitioning from a traditional …
Inequity and the Professionalisation of Speech-Language Pathology
As a profession, speech-language pathology (SLP) continues to struggle with equitable service delivery to both people with communication challenges and disabilities. SLP clinical practice in its traditional form has an individual focus and therefore cannot adequately serve the large population in need, which, in South Africa is the majority population. Using the concept of social embeddedness of professions as a guiding frame, the article explore…
The intersection of disability and food security
Reduced knowledge of HAWs and HCPs regarding disability and the lack of professionals such as speech-language therapists, who manage disability-specific issues such as feeding and swallowing disorders, may affect the food security of people living with disabilities in food assistance contexts
Renewing Our Cultural Borderlands
The professions of speech-language pathology and audiology provide valuable services for persons with communication, hearing, and feeding/swallowing disabilities. However, from a global perspective, mainstream practice discourses represent values from colonial perspectives (called Northern here). As such, they remain largely inaccessible to most people in the world. We argue, from a South African perspective, for a postcolonial or Southern discou…
Some psychological characteristics of patients with anorexia nervosa whose weight has been newly restored
A preliminary study has served to demonstrate that patients with primary anorexia nervosa whose weight has been newly restored to normal, and who are currently involved in individual and family psychotherapy, are significantly characterized by having very low self‐esteem, by being highly sensitive to social interactions and by being ‘obsessoid’. It is suggested that, in therapy, specific behavioural approaches to these problems may usefully compl…
