Milan Seminar
This book contains John Bowlby's previously unpublished 'Milan Seminar', together with a new introduction provided by Marco Bacciagaluppi, and the publication for the first time of previously unseen correspondence between Bowlby and Bacciagaluppi. The seminar includes Bowlby's comments on cases presented by Italian colleagues, and should be of great interest for English-speaking readers, bringing this material to light for the first time
Fromm's Concern with Feminine Values
The Dialectics Between Biological and Cultural Evolution
Evolutionary Aspects of Silvano Arieti's Work
I would like to say a few personal words before beginning this article. I was a pupil of Arieti's in New York in 1963-1964, and then, for several years, together with my wife, I translated most of his books into Italian, in close cooperation with the author. Arieti was eager for his writings to be known in his country of origin. I met Arieti through Pier Francesco Galli and the "Milanese Group for the Development of Psychotherapy," which Galli ha…

The influence of ferenczi on bowlby
Bowlby may be viewed as one of the strongest exponents of the alternative psychoanalytic approach initiated by Ferenczi. His most important contributions are, on a theoretical level, to have potentially placed psychoanalysis onto a firm evolutionary basis, and, at a practical level, to have generated an enormous amount of empirical research. The main traits he shares with Ferenczi are independence of mind and the stress on a loving relationship i…
The Relevance of Attachment Research to Psychoanalysis and Analytic Social Psychology
The extensive empirical research generated by attachment theory is briefly reviewed, with special reference to transgenerational transmission of attachment patterns, internal working models, cross-cultural, and longitudinal studies. It is claimed that attachment theory and research support the alternative psychoanalytic approach initiated by Ferenczi, especially as regards the re-evaluation of real-life traumatic events, the occurrence of persona…

Inversion of parent‐child relationships
Bowlby describes premature parental behaviour in children when discussing the inversion of parent‐child relationships. Normal parental behaviour in children is discussed. Pathological parental behaviour in children is viewed as basically elicited by the weak, infantile aspects of parents. A case history is presented. Premature parental behaviour is viewed as one of several binding mechanisms which may keep a child tied to his/her family of origin
Some Remarks on the Oedipus Complex from an Ethological Point of View
Starting from the classical psychoanalytic view that, in human evolution, an overlap of sexual maturation and dependency occurred, the oedipal situation is regarded as an innate behavioral sequence that also includes appropriate parental responses. An integration between this level of development and the earlier sequence of symbiosis and separation is attempted. In this connection, Bowlby's concept of the subsidiary attachment figure plays a cent…
The Relevance of Ethology to Interpersonal Psychodynamics and to Wider Social Issues
After a presentation of bowlby's attachment theory and ethological point of view, the authors have suggested that the sequence of symbiosis and separation-individuation, described by Mahler, may be integrated within this frame of reference. The root of psychopathology is considered to be a complex structure, termed bad symbiosis, in which the dual unsatisfied basic needs of the mother interact with those of the child. Clinical illustrations of th…
