  • Childhood maltreatment and the risk of impaired glucose metabolism or type 2 diabetes in young adults

    Open Access•Sonya S Deschêne, Finiki Nearchou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2025•Referencias: 48

We examined the associations between childhood maltreatment and the risk of impaired glucose metabolism (IGM) or type 2 diabetes (T2D) in young adults aged 18-35. Participants ( N = 8506) from the Lifelines Cohort Study without IGM or diabetes at baseline (2007-2013) were included. Childhood maltreatment was assessed by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and incident IGM/T2D was assessed by haemoglobin A 1c levels (≥5.7%) in 2014-2017. Ther…

  • Anger Expression Styles, Cynical Hostility, and the Risk for the Development of Type 2 Diabetes or Diabetes-Related Heart Complications

R Ward, Richard Andrew Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2024

OBJECTIVE: Limited research has examined associations between trait anger and hostility and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) and diabetes-related heart complications. However, anger expression styles (i.e., anger-in, anger-out) have not been examined. The present study used secondary data to examine the associations between anger expression styles, cynical hostility, and the risk of developing T2D (objective 1) or diabetes-related heart complicatio…

  • Facilitating participation in cardiovascular preventive initiatives among people with diabetes

Open Access•Marie Dahl, Susanne Friis Søndergaard et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Encouraging people with T2D to participate in cardiovascular preventive initiatives may necessitate a tailored invitation strategy. We propose a model for an invitational process that takes into consideration invitees' characteristics, including powerlessness, empowerment, health literacy and self-efficacy. This model may enhance participation in such initiatives. However, participation is a general concern, not only in relation to cardiovascular…

  • Modeling Interactions Between Latent Variables in Research on Type D Personality

Open Access•Paul Lodder, Johan Denollet et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2019

Several approaches exist to model interactions between latent variables. However, it is unclear how these perform when item scores are skewed and ordinal. Research on Type D personality serves as a good case study for that matter. In Study 1, we fitted a multivariate interaction model to predict depression and anxiety with Type D personality, operationalized as an interaction between its two subcomponents negative affectivity (NA) and social inhi…

  • Emotional Well-Being Factors Associated with Sexual Dysfunction in Adults with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes

Adriana D Ventura, Jessica L Browne et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2018

Objective: Diabetes is a chronic health condition that requires daily self-management activities to prevent or delay the onset of serious long-term complications. The two main types of diabetes are Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Although both differ in their etiology, they share similar challenges of self-management of blood glucose levels, which, if are persistently high over time can lead to serious long-term complications. Sexual dysf…

  • The role of hypoglycemia in the burden of living with diabetes among adults with diabetes and family members

Open Access•Giesje Nefs, Frans Pouwer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Approximately half of adults with diabetes and adult family members experienced at least some diabetes burden. In both groups, diabetes burden appeared to be associated with being very worried about hypoglycemia at least occasionally. If these results are replicated, new intervention studies could test new ways of decreasing the traumatic consequences of previous or anticipated hypoglycemic events for people with diabetes and family members

  • What is the best measure for assessing diabetes distress? A comparison of the Problem Areas in Diabetes and Diabetes Distress Scale

    Open Access•Eva K Fenwick, Eva Fenwick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2018•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 35

This study used Rasch analysis to examine the psychometric validity of the Diabetes Distress Scale and the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale to assess diabetes distress in 3338 adults with diabetes (1609 completed the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale ( n = 675 type 1 diabetes; n = 934 type 2 diabetes) and 1705 completed the Diabetes Distress Scale ( n = 693 type 1 diabetes; n = 1012 type 2 diabetes)). While criterion and convergent validity were goo…

  • Diabetes Complications and Depressive Symptoms

    Sonya S Deschêne, Rita J Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2017

OBJECTIVE: Prospective studies testing the potential impact of diabetes complications on depression are limited. The present study examined the longitudinal associations between diabetes complications and the risk and recurrence/persistence of depressive symptoms. METHODS: Data were from a prospective community cohort telephone survey of adults with diabetes (N = 1314). Diabetes complications and depressive symptoms were assessed via self-report …

  • Diabetes Miles Youth–Australia

    Open Access•Virginia Hagger, Steven L Trawley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2016

The online survey format was a successful and economical approach for engaging young people with type 1 diabetes and their parents. This rich quantitative and qualitative dataset focuses not only on diabetes management and healthcare access but also on important psychosocial factors (e.g. social support, general emotional well-being, and diabetes distress). Analysis of the Diabetes MILES Youth-Australia Study data is ongoing, and will provide fur…

  • Diabetes Miles – The Netherlands

Open Access•Giesje Nefs, Mariska Bot et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The Diabetes MILES Study enables detailed investigation of the psychosocial aspects of living with diabetes and an opportunity to put these findings in an international context. With several papers planned resulting from a pooled Australian-Dutch dataset and data collections planned in other countries, the Diabetes MILES Study International Collaborative will contribute substantially to identifying potentially unmet needs of those living with dia…

  • Diabetes Miles-Australia (management and impact for long-term empowerment and success)

Open Access•Jane Speight, Jessica L Browne et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

A potential limitation of the study is the under-representation of respondents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin). Diabetes MILES--Australia represents a major achievement in the study of diabetes in Australia, where for the first time, the focus is on psychosocial and behavioural aspects of this condition at a national level

  • Higher levels of psychological distress are associated with a higher risk of incident diabetes during 18 year follow-up

Open Access•Paula Mc Mommersteeg, Raphael M Herr et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Higher levels of psychological distress are a risk factor for the development of diabetes during an 18 year follow up period. This association may be potentially mediated by low energy level and impaired health status

    Open Access•Tibor Hajos, T R S Hajos et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2011

An association between improvement in HbA(1c) by means of optimising insulin therapy and improvement in HRQoL in type 2 diabetes patients has been observed. A weak, yet significant longitudinal association was found between improved HbA(1c) and emotional well-being and diabetes symptom distress

  • Psychological risk factors of micro- and macrovascular outcomes in primary care patients with type 2 diabetes

Open Access•Giesje Nefs, Frans Pouwer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The DiaDDZoB Study is expected to contribute to the current understanding of the course of depression in primary care patients with type 2 diabetes and will also test whether depressed patients or those with Type D personality are at increased risk for (further) development of micro- and cardiovascular disease. More knowledge about the mechanisms behind this association is needed to guide new intervention studies

  • Psychological functioning in primary progressive versus secondary progressive multiple sclerosis

Open Access•Luc Vleugels, Lilian Pfennings et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1998

Psychological functioning in two types of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients is assessed: primary progressive (PP) and secondary progressive (SP) patients. On the basis of differences in clinical course and underlying pathology we hypothesized that primary progressive patients and secondary progressive patients might have different psychological functioning. Seventy patients treated in an MS centre were examined cross‐sectionally. Forty had an SP c…
