The voice characterisation checklist
The VoCC is a reliable and internally consistent tool for assessing voice characterisation and will be used to test whether voice characterisation moderates treatment outcome to AVATAR therapy. There is potential wider utility within clinical trials of other relational therapies as well as routine clinical practice
The impact of Patient and Public Involvement in the SlowMo study
BACKGROUND: The SlowMo study demonstrated the effects of SlowMo, an eight-session digitally supported reasoning intervention, on paranoia in a large-scale randomized-controlled trial with 362 participants with schizophrenia-spectrum psychosis. AIM: The current evaluation aimed to investigate the impact of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in the SlowMo study. METHOD: PPI members were six women and three men from Sussex, Oxford and London with …
Do Antipsychotics Improve Reasoning Biases? A Review
OBJECTIVE: To explore how reasoning biases in schizophrenic patients respond to treatment. Patients with schizophrenia, especially those with delusions, show not only cognitive deficits but also "reasoning biases," namely, "jumping to conclusions," reduced belief flexibility, an externalizing attributional style, and an impaired "theory of mind." METHODS: This is a systematic review of 17 longitudinal and cross-sectional studies. RESULTS: "Jumpin…
A cognitive model of the positive symptoms of psychosis
In the last 10 years a consensus has developed that the symptoms of psychosis may be better understood by linking the steps between the phenomenological experiences and social, psychological and neurobiological levels of explanation. Cognitive models of psychosis are an important link in this chain. They provide a psychological description of the phenomena from which hypotheses concerning causal processes can be derived and tested; social, indivi…
Construction of ‘paranoia’
Cognitive behavioural therapy for drug‐resistant psychosis
A small controlled trial of cognitive behaviour therapy for drug‐resistant psychosis is reported. The study was designed as a pilot study for a future larger and longer randomized controlled trial. The therapy was offered to patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizo‐affective psychosis who presented unremitting positive symptoms. An average of 16 sessions were delivered over a six‐month period. The results of this pilot study are promi…
Delusions
A review is made of definitions of ‘delusion’. Problems with these are considered in terms of clarity and consistency with the evidence. Questions concerning the issues of fixity and intensity of delusions are raised and a proposal is made for attempting to operationalize these concepts using a ‘personal questionnaire’ method. The measurement in a pilot study of the fixity and intensity of the beliefs of two patients using this method is describe…
