  • Empty Spaces: Perspectives on emptiness in modern history

    Open Access•Courtney J Campbell, Allegra Giovine et al.•BOOK•Empty Spaces•2019

How is emptiness made and what historical purpose does it serve? What cultural, material and natural work goes into maintaining ‘nothingness’? This volume draws together contributions from authors working on landscapes and rurality, along with national and imperial narratives, and seeks to foreground the importance of emptiness as a productive prism through which to interrogate a variety of imperial, national, cultural and urban histories

Just as, in Nigel Thrift's words, space is the 'fundamental stuff of human geography', time, one might add, is the 'stuff' of history. 1 While this separation seems neat, historians tend to study time and place as parallel concepts; when they merge, spatial history (and historical geography) follows.Important within spatial history are the concepts of 'place' (that is, physical spaces that people naturalize through patterns, behaviour and communi…

  • Making Abolition Brazilian: British Law and Brazilian Abolitionists in Nineteenth-Century Minas Gerais and Pernambuco

    Courtney J Campbell, Courtney Campbell•ARTICLE•Slavery and Abolition•2015

This article compares two cases in which Brazilian abolitionists mobilized around a law passed in 1843 to prohibit British subjects, no matter where they resided, from owning slaves. Placing a case against a large British-owned gold mine in Minas Gerais alongside outcry against a Scottish widow who owned two slaves in Recife, the article argues that this law was used as a rhetorical tool to gain support for abolitionism and create public outrage …
