    This article examines the discursive reconfiguration of the social stratification order in reforming China. Applying the two notions of metadiscourse and entextualization from the natural history of discourse (NHD) perspective (Silverstein & Urban 1996), I argue that the missing link between the discursive and the social is forged through the metadiscourses (Urban 1996) originated by the top leaders of the Communist Party of China, and that their…

    This paper introduces the recently discovered site at Jinsha in the western suburbs of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province. In 2001, hundreds of objects of gold, bronze, jade, stone, and other materials were unearthed at Jinsha, and subsequent fieldwork has revealed that the site was a major settlement of the late Shang and Western Zhou periods, occupying an area of 3 sq km and following in date the famous Sanxingdui site.   • Maximal aerobic power in children and adolescents of Beijing, China

    The maximal aerobic power of 463 Chinese children and adolescents, 10–19 years, is described. The absolute values of maximal oxygen intake (V̇O2max) in boys and girls were 1.75–3.26 and 1.44–2.10 L/min, respectively. Relative values of V̇O2max per unit stature (V̇O2max/stature) were 12.35–19.42 ml/cm.min for boys and 10.18–13.42 ml/cm.min for girls, values per unit weight (V̇O2max/weight) were 48.60–56.59 ml/kg.min for boys and 39.34–45.56 ml/kg.…
