  • Is irregular migration responsive to recent German asylum policy adjustments?

Open Access•Bernd Beber, Christopher Ebert et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2026

We investigate the extent to which asylum policies that aim to deter individuals from migrating irregularly in fact do so. We specifically consider effects of Germany’s 2023 asylum policy adjustments, which include accelerated asylum decision processes, the prospect of asylum processing outside of Europe, the introduction of a payment card to replace cash benefits, and an extended waiting period for native-level benefits. To estimate the effects …

  • Counting missing women

Open Access•Christopher Ebert, Stephan Klasen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2025•References: 9

Stock estimates of missing women suggest that excess female deaths are concentrated in South and East Asia and among young children. In contrast, flow estimates suggest that gender bias in mortality is much larger than previously estimated using stock measures, is as severe among adults as it is among children in India and China, and is larger in Sub-Saharan Africa than in India and China. We show that the different stock and flow measure results…

  • Radiocarbon dating of lake sediment using low-temperature combustion

    Open Access•Darrell S Kaufman, Jordon Bright et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•References: 53

The bulk organic-matter content of near-surface sediment is widely used for radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating, despite often containing organic carbon (OC) older than the depositional age. Low-temperature combustion can mitigate the influence of old OC, producing ages closer to the depositional age. We developed a simple method to determine the 14 C age of the low-temperature ( 14 C and % OC in two aliquots: one heated at 250°C and one unheated. The low…

  • Information frictions, belief updating and internal migration

Open Access•Sarah Frohnweiler, Bernd Beber et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Information frictions about benefits of migration can lead to inefficient migration choices. We study effects of randomly assigned information treatments concerning regional income differentials in Ghana and Uganda to explore participants’ belief updating and changes in internal migration intentions, destination preferences, and actual migration. Treated participants prefer higher income destinations, while effects on intent plausibly follow subj…

  • How to ensure full vaccination? The association of institutional delivery and timely postnatal care with childhood vaccination in a cross-sectional study in rural Bihar, India

Open Access•Mareike Schön, Esther Heesemann et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Incomplete and absent doses in routine childhood vaccinations are of major concern. Health systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), in particular, often struggle to enable full vaccination of children, which affects their immunity against communicable diseases. Data on child vaccination cards from a cross-sectional primary survey with 1,967 households were used to assess the vaccination status. The association of timely postnatal care …

  • Early Modern Atlantic Trade and the Development of Maritime Insurance to 1630

    Christopher Ebert•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2011•Cited by: 6

During an age when Atlantic shipping was beset by many hazards, the voyage of de Hoope, which left Amsterdam in September 1616 to trade in Portugal and Brazil, appears to have been particularly unlucky. The ship lay in Porto in April 1617, where its captain, Engel Habet, and his brother had sold their cargo of salted perch and cod. The presence of these two Dutchmen in a Portuguese harbour at this time would have been quite normal. The long-dista…

  • Between Empires

    Christopher Ebert•BOOK•Between empires•2008

This study examines the wholesale trade in sugar from Brazil to markets in Europe. The principal market was northwestern Europe, but for much of the time between 1550 and 1630 Portugal was drawn into the conflict between Habsburg Spain and the Dutch Republic. In spite of political obstacles, the trade persisted because it was not subject to monopolies and was relatively lightly regulated and taxed. The investment structure was highly internationa…
