  • Impact of private practice of public health workers on public health provision: Evidence from a natural experiment

    Open Access•Paula González, Gabriel Montes-Rojas et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•References: 26

This paper analyzes the effects of private practice on public health provision in Indonesia among doctor heads of primary public health clinics known as puskesmas. We exploit the exogenous variation in the initiation of private practice after the 1997 Ministry of Health regulation 916 that mandated health professionals to apply for a license for private practice after at least three years of compulsory public service after graduation. Instrumenta…

  • External Shocks and Inflationary Pressures in Argentina: A Post-Keynesian-Structuralist Empirical Approach

    Gabriel Montes-Rojas, Fernando Toledo•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2021•References: 4

We examine two external shocks that trigger inflationary pressures in Argentina. The first corresponds to a shock in international prices of agricultural commodities exported by this country. The second external shock affects the nominal exchange rate ($/U$S). Through the estimation of a quarterly VAR with directional quantiles model for the 2004–2019 period, we show how the pass-through from these external shocks to the inflation rate operates a…

  • What are the Empirical Determinants of International Tourist Arrivals and Expenditures?: An Empirical Application to the Case of São Tomé and Príncipe

    Gabriel Montes-Rojas, Rafael Barroso•BOOK•2020

The link between tourism and growth is very important for some countries, especially small island countries like São Tomé and Príncipe. This paper investigates the empirical determinants of tourism outcomes (tourist arrivals and expenditures) and uses the findings to assess the performance of the tourism sector in São Tomé and Príncipe. The paper confirms most of the results found in the literature on the general determinants of tourism. Tourist …

  • Earnings and Caste: An Evaluation of Caste Wage Differentials in the Nepalese Labour Market

R M Mainali, Ram Mainali et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

This paper examines the sources of wage differentials among castes in Nepal, a country which had, until 1963, an age-old caste-based social division of labour. We use an extended Oaxaca decomposition model with occupation and firm size augmenting the conventionally used measures of human capital endowments. Our results indicate that caste wage differentials in Nepal are large and that human capital endowments and lack of access to better paying o…

  • Informal Jobs and Trade Liberalisation in Argentina

Pablo Acosta, Gabriel Montes-Rojas•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2014

Rapid trade liberalisation can exert profound effects on labour markets. Domestic firms, to sustain competitiveness for survival, could react by cutting labour benefits to achieve cost reductions. Alternatively, trade liberalisation may alter the industry composition of firms, changing the aggregate formality rates. This paper studies the relationship between trade liberalisation and informality in Argentina. Using manufacturing industry-level da…

  • Migration, Remittances and Capital Accumulation: Evidence from Rural Mexico

Vera Chiodi, Esteban Jaimovich et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2012

This article studies the link between migration, remittances and asset accumulation for a panel of poor rural households in Mexico over the period 1997–2006. In a context of financial markets' imperfections, migration may act as a substitute for imperfect credit and insurance provision (through remittances from migrants) and, thus, exert a positive effect on investment. However, it may well be the case that remittances are channelled towards incr…

  • Releasing Constraints to Growth or Pushing on a String? Policies and Performance of Mexican Micro-Firms

Pablo Fajnzylber, William F Maloney et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2009

Using firm-level data from Mexico, this paper investigates the firm characteristics associated with participation in credit markets, access to training, tax payments and membership in business associations. We find that firms which participate in these institutions exhibit significantly higher profits. Moreover, firms that borrow from formal or informal sources and those that pay taxes are significantly more likely to stay in business but firms t…
