The US Army’s defensive tactics and military adaptation during the Korean War, 1950–1951
Expecting the Next Coup? The Unchallenged Brazilian Military's Bargaining Power
The civil-military relations in Brazil have faced criticism due to weak political institutions and significant military autonomy, resulting in a regression of democratisation. This article posits that the shortcomings in Brazilian civil-military relations have historical roots, with military prerogatives established in the early twentieth century and largely unopposed since that time. The military's robust corporate identity and its pivotal role …

Contesting perspectives on South Atlantic maritime security governance
Faced with significant changes to the economic and strategic scenario in the South Atlantic over the past decade, the region’s two major powers – Brazil and South Africa – have taken divergent approaches to policymaking for the maritime sphere. Whereas Brazil has, in essence, transferred its terrestrial security policy to the oceans and maintains a state-based deterrent approach, South Africa has invested heavily in governance-based approaches at…
Brazil, the Blue Economy and the maritime security of the South Atlantic
This paper points out that the Brazilian emerging maritime approach is a remarkable change in its post-Cold War era's defence policy. The constraints of the US regional hegemony in the American continent resulted in a reactive defence policy throughout the twentieth century and its division from Brazilian foreign policy. Although the regional systemic conditions of powers remain in the twenty-first century, the ‘Atlantic energy renaissance’ promi…
New Fighter Aircraft Acquisitions in B razil and I ndia
How do states decide where to source arms? Drawing on theories of international relations, we consider the recent fighter aircraft competitions in Brazil and India, and analyze why the U.S.‐made aircraft lost to their European rivals. Official statements offered by the Brazilian and Indian governments have cited inferior aircraft performance, technology‐sharing issues, and prices. These explanations may be valid, but their main purpose is to dire…
The concept of logistics derived from Clausewitz
This article assesses the existing literature on logistics in war, concluding that there is no satisfactory conceptual definition of logistics. It proposes a concept of logistics derived from Clausewitz's theory of war to fill that void. This is presented as a derivation because Clausewitz's distinction between (1) the use of the fighting forces (tactics and strategy) and (2) all other activities in war that were required so that forces could be …

O artigo realiza ainda um estudo mais detalhado dos aspectos táticos e logísticos dessas forças que compõem a capacidade de intervenção militar dos Es…
