A Marxist Critique of the Ruined University
Interlude 1
‘The university is dead, long live the university!’
Power and agency within the evaluative state
This article addresses the problem of the quantification of higher education by introducing a theoretical framework for power relations and agency within this process. Instead of treating evaluation regimes as external and imposed on the sector, it argues for a relational approach to the problem of exercising power over the higher education sector through means of evaluation. To develop such an approach, the article draws on two sources: Guy Neav…
The common good and academic freedom in Poland
This article addresses the inadequacy of the universal approach to academic freedom, which fails to account for the extent to which academic freedom can be exercised. Instead of considering the fixed meaning of academic freedom, the article proposes a relational approach. One that focuses on the relation between academic freedom and the common good, as particular articulations of academic freedom are legitimized through reference to the quasi‐uni…
The future is always-already now
In this paper, we place the issue of university activism in the context of constituent and constituted power. By this we mean the ever-present danger that activists’ demands will be co-opted and concurrently deactivated. To mitigate this risk, we develop a set of conceptual tools that enables thinking about the activist university in terms of instituent praxis; that is, an open process of co-becoming of an institution and its actors through the c…
Imagination as Crisis
Many current Marxist debates point to a crisis of imagination as a challenge to emancipatory thoughts and actions. The naturalisation of the capitalist mode of production within the production of subjectivity is among the chief reasons behind this state of affairs. This article contributes to the debate by focusing on the notion of imagination, marked by a deep ambivalence capable of both naturalising and denaturalising social relations constitut…
Pomyśleć materializm od nowa
In his book Althusser and His Contemporaries. Philosophyʼs Perpetual War (2013) Warren Montag proposed an interpretation of Louis Althusserʼs work through engagements with Althusserʼs own contemporaries but above all through his engagement with Baruch Spinoza. This review essay is an attempt to both reconstruct and evaluate this attempt by showing heretical nature of Althusserʼs and Spinozaʼs materialism
Autonomia oporu – Marks, Spinoza i akumulacja pierwotna
This article is an attempt at a simultaneous reading of Marx and Spinoza. We venture to show that the immanentistic ontology and the political anthropology of the latter enriches the critique of capitalism with a better understanding of a subjectivity’s function in the process of creating dominance. At the same time we view this process as incomplete. This view is enabled by the use of Spinoza's concept of imagination, which is crucial to our end…

Czym są marksistowskie badania szkolnictwa wyższego
In this short introduction to the thematic issue of Theoretical Practice we draw on the Marxist concept of critique to explain how Marxist higher education research could be understood as a constituting practice within-against-beyond the contemporary university in crisis
