Society on the 50th anniversary of the founding of ANS.From its rocky and tumultous beginning in 1951 to the present, the Society has managed, through the efforts of many persons, to survive and make outstanding contributions to the study of names and to the furtherance of knowledge through the many scholarly articles in the Society's magazine. The officers of the Society have also encouraged the publication of a library of books and articles on n…

[To my mentor and my friend Wilhelm Nicolaisen, who has many times dragged me clear of onomastic disasters, I dedicate this small token of my respect for his great mastery of scholarship in many disciplines and also for his witty and colorful personality]Color names can all be called metaphorical and have come about in accord with human concepts of reality or realities. They are also arbitrary; and probably in common with all names, they have no …

To praise a scholar is to face the light of eternity, to recognize the inexhaustibility of the mind, to feel the immortality of intelligence, and to glorify a worthy human. The task is no doubt impossible; the attempt enhances the praiser without depreciating the scholar or the scholarship. Many definitions of scholar exist, but, in the case here, I prefer the description found in The Talmud: "A scholar should be like a leather bott~e, which admits…

  • Dickens and His Lists of Names

    Open Access•Kelsie B Harder•ARTICLE•Names•1982

Novelists, it seems, tend to use proper names in a particular way to express an attitude or to reveal character. Dickens is one of the more supreme examples among English novelists in this respect. Since Ihave dealt with this tendency elsewhere, 1Ishould like to note briefly the lists of names that Dickens left in his' 'Book of Memoranda, compiled between 1855 and 1865,2 a kind of notebook in which he put down or jotted hints and suggestions for …
