  • Syntactic Priming Effects During the Comprehension of Passive Voice in Portuguese

Open Access•Natália Pinheiro De Angeli, Mailce Borges Mota et al.•ARTICLE•Caligrama Revista de Estudos…•2024

Syntactic priming refers to the facilitation that occurs in the processing of a given complex syntactic structure when the speaker has been previously exposed to the same structure or to a similar one. Using a self-paced reading task, we investigate the effects of syntactic priming during the comprehension of passive sentences in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Adult native speakers of BP read target passive sentences in primed and unprimed conditions…

Open Access•Natália Pinheiro, Natália Pinheiro De Angeli et al.•ARTICLE•Ilha do Desterro A Journal of…•2023

The present study investigated cross-linguistic structural priming effects from L1 to L2 during the comprehension of the passive voice in a group of 35 Brazilian Portuguese-English (BP-EN) late bilinguals. A 4 x 2 experimental design was implemented that included a four levels within-subjects Condition variable and a between-subjects Proficiency variable (Intermediate vs. Advanced). Results show that, regardless of proficiency, participants read …

  • Spelling-sound knowledge in the context of multilingualism

Open Access•Luiza De Melo Carvalho, Mailce Borges Mota et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Linguagem em Foco•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The present study investigates shared phonological information and selectivity during lexical access in Brazilian Portuguese-English unbalanced bilinguals, learners of Korean as an L3. Participants took part in a word naming task which used L2 primes with targets from the L3 at stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) of 140ms and 250ms. The results show a significant facilitation effect in word naming when an English prime was presented in comparison w…

  • Structural priming effects during the oral production of English as l2

Open Access•Francineide Fatima Davies Dos Santos, Mailce Borges Mota•ARTICLE•Revista Linguíʃtica•2022

Structural priming effects in L1 oral production are associated with the automatic nature of processing and implicit knowledge. In L2, however, these effects are not well known. The present study investigated syntactic processing in the oral production of Brazilian Portuguese late learners of English as L2 to determine if structural priming effects can be detected within the L2. To do so, participants performed an oral sentence production task in…

  • Crosslinguistic influence in the production of English as L3

Open Access•Pâmela Freitas Pereira Toassi, Mailce Borges Mota•ARTICLE•Revista Horizontes de Linguistica…•2021

Crosslinguistic influence (CLI) refers to the phenomenon of how one language affects the acquisition and processing of another language by the same speaker. Bilinguals and multilinguals offer a good opportunity to study crosslinguistic phenomena since they have multiple language systems in interaction. Here we report the results of a study which investigated CLI in bilinguals and trilinguals. The objective of the study was twofold: (1) to analyze…

  • Effects of Bilingualism on Inhibitory Control and Working Memory

Open Access•Rossana Kramer, Mailce Borges Mota•ARTICLE•Gragoatá•2015

A dense body of research shows that cognitive functions change with age. More recently, studies have provided evidence that bilingualism aids in offsetting age-related losses in executive function (Bialystok, Craik, Klein & Viswanathan, 2004; Salvatierra, 2010). The present study investigates the performances of early bilinguals (Brazilian Portuguese/Hunsrückisch), late bilinguals (Brazilian Portuguese/English), and monolinguals (Brazilian Portug…
