Drivers of Eco‐Guilt Among Travellers. A Mixed‐Method Investigation Using Self‐Perception Theory
Eco‐guilt refers to the feeling of moral unease that travellers experience when they realise their own role in causing environmental damage. Although several studies have examined pro‐environmental behaviour, this emotion has not received sufficient attention in the context of tourism and travel. The present study attempts to understand how emotional connection with nature and individual value‐based orientations are related to the feeling of eco‐…
Oh, the places you can go … if you ace calculus
Minoritized students tend to have lower undergraduate degree attainment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) than their White and South and East Asian counterparts. According to the Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory (PVEST), factors related to historical contexts, systemic processes, and the individual interact to lead to underrepresentation in STEM. However, most of the literature on minoritized STEM st…

The Reasoning through Evidence versus Advice (EvA) Scale
Our well-being can improve when people heed evidence rather than simply follow familiar or charismatic advisors who neglect evidence. We developed the Reasoning through Evidence versus Advice (EvA) scale to measure individual differences in reasoning through evidence like science and statistics versus following advisors such as politicians and celebrities. No existing scales directly measure these tendencies; moreover, it was theoretically unknow…
Syphilis Among U.S.-Bound Refugees, 2015 − 2018
We assessed syphilis screening data from overseas medical examinations among U.S.-bound refugees to characterize seropositive syphilis cases and treatment from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2018. During this time period, all refugees 15 years and older were required to undergo syphilis screening prior to resettlement to the United States. Of the 160,381 refugee arrivals who had a syphilis screening performed, 697 (434 per 100,000) were diagnos…
The association between different sources of distraction and symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
Findings support a growing body of literature linking spontaneous mind-wandering and ADHD, and they highlight the heterogeneity in the association between ADHD symptoms and different sources of distraction

Drivers and barriers in the consumption of alternative staples. A systematic literature review and future research agenda
Purpose Major cereal staples such as wheat, white rice and corn have a significant negative impact on the environment, a low nutritional profile and are associated with obesity. In comparison, alternative staples (such as rye, quinoa, buckwheat, etc.) are more environmentally sustainable and nutritious, yet are underused. There has been a recent surge in research into and awareness of alternative staples, but the current understanding of the diff…
You’re not here for the right reasons!” From The Bachelorette to Instagram Influencer
Despite vast research on reality television (RTV) and The Bachelor (2002) franchise specifically, most scholarship focuses on its appeal or negative impact on viewers. The inclusion of social media analysis is under-used in research on the series or any of its offshoots. Our work, however, analyzes how the women of The Bachelorette make the transition to influencer status on Instagram. Through critical visual analysis, we build on the theoretical…
Maybe they’re born with it, or maybe it’s experience
Decades of research suggest that learning styles, or the belief that people learn better when they receive instruction in their dominant way of learning, may be one of the most pervasive myths about cognition. Nonetheless, little is known about what it means to believe in learning styles. The present investigation uses one theoretical framework—psychological essentialism—to explore the content and consistency of people’s learning style beliefs. P…
Investigating the Effects of Spacing on Working Memory Training Outcome
Our findings have practical implications by showing that the variation in training schedule, at least within the range used here, does not seem to be a crucial element for training benefits
The effect of pressure on high- and low-working-memory students
SampleFifty-three third and fourth graders from China participated in this study.MethodParticipants' working memory (WM) was assessed by the Automated Operation Span task. Then, they solved mental addition problems of different types under low- and high-pressure conditions. Performance was analysed as a function of pressure condition, working memory capacity, and problem type.ResultsOn 'no carry' mental addition problems, there was no difference …
Barbaric pearl and gold’
In her travelogue, Scenes and Characteristics of Hindostan, with Sketches of Anglo-Indian Society (1835), Emma Roberts is distinctly concerned with Anglo-Indian women's success in taking up their domestic duties and thus influencing the men who govern India. Fearing that British men still come to India in hopes of securing the vast fortunes that corrupted earlier adventurers, Roberts suggests that it is her female readers who, as Anglo-Indian wiv…

Cultural Differences in Allocation of Attention in Visual Information Processing
Previous research has shown that when processing visual scenes, Westerners attend to salient objects and East Asians attend to the relationships between focal objects and background elements. It is possible that cross-cultural differences in attentional allocation contribute to these earlier findings. In this article, the authors investigate cultural differences in attentional allocation in two experiments, using a visual change detection paradig…
How are visuospatial working memory, executive functioning, and spatial abilities related? A latent-variable analysis.
The separability of working memory resources for spatial thinking and language processing
The current study demonstrates the separability of spatial and verbal working memory resources among college students. In Experiment 1, we developed a spatial span task that taxes both the processing and storage components of spatial working memory. This measure correlates with spatial ability (spatial visualization) measures, but not with verbal ability measures. In contrast, the reading span test, a common test of verbal working memory, correla…
