Attachment and (in)securities. Threats to the notion of rootedness in neighbourhood space in Barcelona
Lockdown due to Covid-19 reinforced the notion of proximity in the provision of well-being and the everyday care. The limitations on mobility meant the (re)discovery of neighbourhood life and of fellow residents. The neighbourhood was once again shown as a space of roots where shared loyalties and social identities were formed and reinforced social cohesion and generated mutual support networks in response to an unprecedented situation such as th…
Strategy or Necessity? The Determinants of Marriage Between Relatives in the Barcelona Area, Sixteenth–Nineteenth Centuries
Consanguineous marriages illustrate the complex interplay between environmental and social factors in family formation. However, there remains a significant lack of quantitative studies exploring this phenomenon in preindustrial contexts. In this sense, this study examines the intensity and the structural and strategic determinants of consanguineous marriages in the Barcelona area between the 16th and 19th centuries, utilizing the unique Barcelon…

Citizen actions in touristic neighbourhoods
Touristification transforms the urban life of many tourist destination cities, leading to changes in the uses and values of city real estate, and generating a displacement of the most vulnerable sectors of the population. The objective of this research is the analysis of citizens’ strategies for facing this transformation process, considering that the associative and protest tradition in neighbourhoods can dampen (and this is our hypothesis) the …

Towards an Even More Spatially Diversified City? New Metropolitan Population Trends in the Post-Economic Crisis Period
After the deep economic crisis that began in 2008, in 2014, Spain started to show signs of recovery, entering the so-called “post-crisis” period. Though it has not yet reached the entire population, economic improvement has had a positive impact on the real estate market, economic activity, and employment. Residential mobility has also increased, but flows have become more unstable and complex. The direction of these flows, the reasons for moving…
The Impact of Economic Crisis in Areas of Sprawl in Spanish Cities
The development of dispersed urbanism in Spain ran parallel to the real estate boom and consolidated a new model of city sprawl based on the expansion of suburban areas. This process, which started in the mid 1980s, came to a halt with the onset of the economic crisis in 2007. With it, construction stopped, mobility fell, and urban growth came to a standstill. The purpose of this article is, firstly, to analyse the recent evolution and chronology…

Movilidad residencial en tiempos de crisis. El caso de la Región Metropolitana de Barcelona
This article focuses on the effect of the crisis on residential mobility from the study of intrametropolitan migration of the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona.
