Bolsonarism, “Immanentist Pentecostalism,” and the Future of Religion and Politics in Brazil
This article introduces “Immanentist Pentecostalism” (IP) to analyse the complex relationship between Bolsonarism and (Neo)Pentecostalism in Brazil. Based on in- depth interviews in Belo Horizonte, IP is defined as a lived theology characterised by a direct, constant relationship with an immanent divine active in all worldly life. The ethnographic findings reveal the primacy of personal faith over institutional loyalty; overt political discourse …
Epistemic Ambivalence
This book delves into the complex relationship between religious imaginaries and the perception of space among followers of Candomblé and Pentecostal churches in Belo Horizonte, Brazil's third-largest urban agglomeration. It adopts a dual perspective, examining the broader political, economic, and social dimensions of these religious communities' urbanisation and spatial distribution and their members' individual beliefs and behaviours. Through t…
Making urban design teaching more permeable to regional green infrastructure
This paper discusses aspects of urban design teaching that restrict its permeability to green infrastructure concepts and regional planning instruments. Through an experiment with the urban design studio ‘Designing the Trama Verde Azul (TVA)’, it presents the experience of studio teaching related to the regional planning of the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region in line with green infrastructure concepts. This paper highlights that the viability …
The production of knowledge through religious and social media infrastructure
Following Robertson’s discussions on epistemic capital, the article analyses worldmaking procedures being used by members of one of the biggest neo-Pentecostal churches in Brazil – Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus. According to the popular narrative, social media, especially WhatsApp groups, contributed in a crucial way to the spread of sets of conspiracy theories aimed to question “established narratives” and creating an image of Jair Bolsonaro…
Planejamento metropolitano e grandes projetos urbanos
