  • Change in Public Bureaucracies

    Open Access•Marshall W Meyer•BOOK•Change in public bureaucracies•1979

This book examines in detail the process of change in 240 city, county and state public bureaucracies responsible for local finance administration. Using the longitudinal method of analysis, the data show organizational structures to be much less stable than conventional stereotypes have suggested. Variables such as organizational leadership, claims to domain, and survival (as opposed to replacement or reorganization) were found to mediate enviro…

  • The Process of Bureaucratization

    Marshall W Meyer, M Craig Brown•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1977•Citada por: 15

Formalization of personnel procedures in 229 city, country, and state finance agencies is a function of era of origin and subsequent effects of the environment. Whereas origins and the environment account for the extent of formal personnel procedures, formalization in turn gives rise to multitier hierarchies and hierarchy to decentralized decision making. The effects of origins are due to greater openness to environmental pressures at the time of…

  • Leadership and Organizational Structure

    Marshall W Meyer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1975•Citada por: 3

Leadership conditions affect both the stability of and causal relationships among variables describing organizational structure. Where leadership has changed in the past, where it is dependent on higher authority, and where it is in close contact with superiors, organizational structures are unstable over time, but orderly causal relationships among environmental variables, size, and measures of organizational structure appear. Where leadership h…

  • Automation and Bureaucratic Structure

    Marshall W Meyer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1968•Citada por: 3

Most studies of automation in organizations show its effects on human relations, but they neglect changes in formal organizational structure. Data from a study of 254 city, county, and state departments of finance show that the data-processing sections are quite different from other parts of organizations: they have more levels of hierarchy, a wider span of control for first-line supervisors, fewer employees under the direction of higher supervis…

  • A Note on Expertness and the Supervisory Component of Organizations

    Marshall W Meyer, Marshall Meyer•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1973•Referências: 4

Data describing 194 city, county, and state departments of finance in 1966 and 1971 suggest the following. (1) There is a reciprocal relationship between number of expert employees and the size of the supervisory component in organizations. The more supervisory positions in an organization, the more experts needed; but the more experts, the fewer the number of supervisory positions. (2) Decomposition of the effects of size on the number of expert…
