  • Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Diabetes Prevention Outcomes

    Open Access•Yelba Castellon‐Lopez, O Kenrik Duru et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2024

Background: To achieve health equity, interventions should yield similar effectiveness across all patient subgroups. However, the adoption of diabetes prevention strategies and successful weight loss in "real-world" Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) translational studies have varied by race and ethnicity. We examined racial and ethnic differences in diabetes prevention outcomes among study participants from the Prediabetes Informed Decisions and …

  • Preferences for Hypertension Care in Malawi

Open Access•Risa M Hoffman, Khumbo Phiri et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

Hypertension is the most common non-communicable disease diagnosed among people in sub-Saharan Africa. However, little is known about client preferences for hypertension care. We performed a discrete choice experiment in Malawi among people with hypertension, with and without HIV. Participants were asked to select between two care scenarios, each with six attributes: distance, waiting time, provider friendliness, individual or group care, antihyp…

  • Reducing Emergency Department Visits Among Patients With Diabetes by Embedding Clinical Pharmacists in the Primary Care Teams

    Gerardo Moreno, Jeffery Y Fu et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2021•References: 26

BACKGROUND: Pharmacists are effective at improving control of cardiovascular risk factors, but it less clear whether these improvements translate into less emergency department (ED) use and fewer hospitalizations. The UCMyRx program embed pharmacists in primary care. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine if the integration of pharmacists into primary care was associated with lower ED and hospital use for patients with diabetes. DE…

  • Opiate Dependence

Nour Khouzam, Lillian Gelberg et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2020

The prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the homeless population is underestimated despite multiple behavioral risks. Data from a sample of 534 homeless adults from downtown Los Angeles were analyzed to examine the prevalence and predictors of HBV infection in this community. The prevalence of HBV was 7 to 10 times higher than in the US general population rate. Opiate dependence, injection and noninjection use, was an independent predictor of…

  • The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act Evaluation Study

    Jessica M Harwood, Francisca Azocar et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2017•References: 19

OBJECTIVE: The federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) sought to eliminate historical disparities between insurance coverage for behavioral health (BH) treatment and coverage for medical treatment. Our objective was to evaluate MHPAEA's impact on BH expenditures and utilization among "carve-in" enrollees. METHODS: We received specialty BH insurance claims and eligibility data from Optum, sampling 5,987,776 adults enrolled i…

  • LBMR

    Open Access•Chi-Hong Tseng•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

In wireless networks, low-power Zigbee is an excellent network solution for wireless medical monitoring systems. Medical monitoring generally involves transmission of a large amount of data and easily causes bottleneck problems. Although Zigbee's AODV mesh routing provides extensible multi-hop data transmission to extend network coverage, it originally does not, and needs to support some form of load balancing mechanism to avoid bottlenecks. To g…

  • A Longitudinal Investigation of Race, Socioeconomic Status, and Psychosocial Mediators of Allostatic Load in Midlife Women

Dawn M Upchurch, Judith Stein et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2015

OBJECTIVES: This research sought to assess racial and socioeconomic status (SES) differences in level and change in allostatic load (AL) over time in midlife women and to test whether psychosocial factors mediate these relationships. These factors were discrimination, perceived stress, and hostility. METHODS: Longitudinal data obtained from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation were used (n = 2063; mean age at baseline = 46.0 years). Late…

  • Terrorism-Related Fear and Avoidance Behavior in a Multiethnic Urban Population

David P Eisenman, Deborah Glik et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 28

Objectives. We sought to determine whether groups traditionally most vulnerable to disasters would be more likely than would be others to perceive population-level risk as high (as measured by the estimated color-coded alert level) would worry more about terrorism, and would avoid activities because of terrorism concerns. Methods. We conducted a random digit dial survey of the Los Angeles County population October 2004 through January 2005 in 6 l…
