  • Sounding the Body

    Open Access•Jason Allen-Paisant•ARTICLE•Anthurium A Caribbean Studies…•2022

This essay is a study of Credences at the Altar of Cloud , Anthony McNeill’s (1979) second collection of poems. It explores the ethos behind McNeill’s sound poetics, and the ways in which musical soundcapes of the 1970s influence the formal workings of these poems. On a broader level, the essay suggests a framework for thinking about the relationship between music, spirituality, and the poetic process in the Afro-diasporic context. The essay situ…

  • Thinking with Spirits, or Dwelling and Knowing in the Work of Aimé Césaire

    Open Access•Jason Allen-Paisant•ARTICLE•French Studies•2022

This article discusses Aimé Césaire's ethical commitment to more-than-human existence. The intention is not to read Césaire as an 'eco-poet', or through the lens of contemporary 'eco-poetics', terms which might not have meant much to him in the period from the 1930s to the 1950s, when his poetic project took shape. Even if we may today read Césaire's poetry in the light of contemporary eco-poetic and eco-philosophical thought, this article is mor…

    Jason Allen-Paisant•ARTICLE•CR The New Centennial Review•2022•References: 4

Miracson Saint-Val's work begins with personal experience, with corporeal practice, with the lwas—the spirits of Vodou—with which he wishes to experiment. But he also needs to find the right text. According to this Haitian director, Chemin de fer, the text by the Congolese writer Julien Mabiala Bissila, lends itself perfectly to the lines of enquiry that underlie his creative imagination, namely, a language based on the body, on Black bodies caug…

  • Unthinking philosophy

    Jason Allen-Paisant•ARTICLE•Atlantic Studies•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Energised by his concern with the place of poetry in and as philosophy, Césaire’s work is engaged in thinking knowledge, a praxis which becomes fundamental to his critique of the ideology of imperialism. The concern with poetry as magical thinking and the question of what it contributes to philosophy, and more particularly, to epistemology, takes on pressing importance in the light of colonialism, whose domination is predicated on the hegemonic d…

  • Penser et jouer l'absurde dans le théâtre haïtien

    Jason Allen-Paisant•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 1

  • Raising the ghosts of justice

    Open Access•Jason Allen-Paisant•ARTICLE•Cultural Dynamics•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 5

I examine the staging of time, justice and performance in The Trial of Governor Eyre, investigating what this site-specific performance reveals about the experience of time in the context of colonial violence. In doing so, I show that the work's discourse on temporality reflects a vital sense of performativity within an Afro-diasporic context. The work's use of temporality, besides reflecting a cultural adaptation, allows for a remoulding of form…

  • Reading Wilson Harris with Gilles Deleuze

    Open Access•Jason Allen-Paisant•ARTICLE•The Journal of Commonwealth…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article is an attempt at reading Wilson Harris with Gilles Deleuze, considering how the latter’s writings on the image might produce a fresh understanding of Harris’s art of fiction. To do this, I highlight the interest that both Harris and Deleuze have in the theatre as a medium for illustrating their conception of the image in language and thought. Discussing mainly the novel Carnival, I show how Harris assimilates narrative to the theatri…

  • Contraindre le chaos à devenir forme

    Jason Allen-Paisant, Jason Allen•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•2017

    Open Access•Jason Allen-Paisant, Jason Allen•ARTICLE•Journal of Postcolonial Writing•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This article offers a close reading of the lyrical drama And the Dogs Were Silent, and Aimé Césaire's unique deployment of a Dantean imaginary. It argues, specifically, that Dante's "symbolic process" in the Commedia provides a metaphorical structure for the hero's initiation in this work and for the poet's articulation of a philosophy of postcolonial relationality. Showing how Dante's katabasis is used to analogize the creative power of Césaire'…
