Patterns of Technical Change for Colombia in the Twenty-First Century
Following a classical Marxian framework, this article identifies the patterns of technical change in the Colombian economy, disaggregated by sectors, from 2001 to 2022. Using the growth-distribution schedule and data from national accounts, a clear Marx-biased technical pattern (labor-saving and capital-using) was identified for the Colombian economy as a whole and five of its nine economic sectors between 2001 and 2022. Two sectors presented the…
Competition and Distribution of Profit Rates in Colombia
Dynamics of Employment and Accumulation of Capital in Colombia, 1965–2019
Following Marx’s general law of capitalist accumulation, the present article seeks to evaluate the impact of fixed capital stock, labor productivity, and the mass of profits on the dynamics of employment in Colombia from 1965 to 2019 using a Vector Error Correction Model. The results show that the level of employment exhibits a significant long-term relationship with both the fixed capital stock and labor productivity. In line with Marx’s theory,…
Trabajo doméstico no remunerado
Unpaid housework and super-exploitation of labor
The objective of this paper is to suggest a mathematical model of unpaid housework and empirically test its main predictions using data from Mexico (2014) and Colombia (2017) time-use surveys. The model, based upon the Marxist-feminist approach, suggests that the magnitude of unpaid housework is determined by the super-exploitation of labor, i.e. the gap between wages and the value of labor-power. The outcome is an equation that relates positivel…
Employment and accumulation of capital around the world
In Marx's economic theory, the level of employment is fundamentally determined by capital accumulation. Nevertheless, that determination is contradictory since, on the one hand, the employment level expands with the capital stock while, on the other hand, it tends to contract with technical change and the growing productivity of labour. This article seeks to estimate this contradictory effect employing two complementary econometric methods: first…
Economic Growth and the Rate of Profit in Colombia 1967–2019
In recent decades, there has been a growing literature dealing with the empirical estimation of the rate of profit and other Marxian variables in several countries. Nonetheless, there has been a paucity of econometric research about the impact of those Marxian variables on the growth rate in developing countries. This article seeks to evaluate the rate of profit and the rate of accumulation as determinants of the growth rate in Colombia during 19…
