in the context of the recurrent political oscillations that took place in the last decades in Latin America, a new approach strengthened among social sciences, which suggests the existence of an economic continuity: the intensification of the production of raw materials for the world market. This approach, which led to the characterization of these development models as "extractivist", presents two main typologies in which the different countries…
Extractivism or specificity of capital accumulation? A critique on the extractivist approach regarding the case of Argentina
The recent economic and political transformations in many Latin American countries have been increasingly analysed under the (neo-)extractivism approach. Specifically, the debate surrounding the contradictions and limitations of this development model, as well as its consequences, gained traction among scholars. In this article, we intend to put forth a critical analysis of this approach with the goal of giving an account of its explanatory power…
Social Classes and Capital Accumulation in Recent Argentina
In March 2008, the passage of a law to amend grain export taxes in Argentina led to a clash between rural organizations and the national administration. Given its characteristics and political consequences, this clash was one of the most significant events of the Kirchnerist administrations and one of the most outstanding agrarian conflicts in Argentine history. An analysis of it in the context of Argentina's specific pattern of capital accumulat…
The conflict over GM soybean seed saving in Argentina
In this paper, we aim to examine the changing dynamics of the conflict over seed saving of genetically modified soybeans in Argentina. After analysing recent global transformations in seed production, we provide a summary of some noteworthy examples of this confrontation, stressing the actions taken by the social actors involved, in particular the state, whose role in the conflict has changed over time. After battling the attempts of biotechnolog…
