Political Economy of Eco-sustainable Alternatives
Richard Westra's Political Economy of Eco-sustainable Alternatives arrives at a critical juncture in ecological and political-economic thought. As planetary boundaries collapse and market-based env...

Clarification and Application of the Category Profit on Alienation
This article presents profit on alienation (POA) as one of the sources of profit in capitalist economies. In addition to identifying and situating POA among other profit flows, we have attempted to operationalize it in the real estate and finance sectors. In the empirical part of the article, we estimate POA in those sectors in Turkey for the period 2010–2019. The extent of estimated profits based on POA in those sectors is not insignificant. The…
The Value of Marx in The Value of Everything
This brief note concentrates solely on a section of the first part of The Value of Everything: Making and Taking in the Global Economy, specifically “Karl Marx on ‘Production’ Labour.” I discuss several issues: Mazzucato’s understanding of Marx’s distinction between productive and unproductive labor (henceforth PUPL), her terminological vagueness and mistakes, and some inaccurate bibliographic and factual information. JEL Classification: B0, B5, …
The Net Social Wage in Turkey, 1980–2019
This essay conceptualizes the capitalist state’s taxation and expenditure activities in Marx’s circuit of capital. It also empirically shows how the net social wage has evolved in Turkey in the period 1980–2019 and in what direction it has influenced the rate of surplus value. The essay’s empirical findings demonstrate the utter failure of the pseudo-welfare state of Turkey to ameliorate income distribution. Hence, the article contributes to demo…
Productive and Unproductive Labour
This article starts out by trying to demonstrate why the distinction between productive and unproductive labour (PUPL) is crucial, both for the analysis of the trajectory of capitalism in general and for an understanding of the peculiar features of late twentieth century capitalism. Subsequent sections provide the necessary clarification about the distinction between PUPL by focusing on the concepts 'productive labour in general' and 'productive …
Measuring the Wealth of Nations
This book provides an alternative foundation for the measurement of the production of nations, and applies it to the US economy for the postwar period. The patterns which result are significantly different from those derived within conventional systems of national accounts. Conventional national accounts seriously distort basic economic aggregates, because they classify military, bureaucratic and financial activities as creation of new wealth, wh…
Interview with Paul M. Sweezy
The following interview was conducted by Sungar Savran, visiting scholar in economics, and E. Ahmet Tonak, professor of economics at Simon's Rock of Bard College, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts on March 20, 1986. The interview previously appeared in Onbirinci Tez (Eleven Thesis), a Marxist theoretical journal published quarterly in Istanbul, Turkey since November 1985. The interviewers, who are the members of the editorial collective of Onbir…
Who Needs a Strong State
In his "Korea and Dependency Theory" (MR October 1985), Aidan Foster-Carter states that "[d]ependency theorists, for their part, point to the alleged costs of the Seoul way [of industrialization]. These include: an enormous foreign debt burden ($40 billion, and growing); the longest average working week of any that the ILO records...and rule by a military dictator. So Seoul-style growth is said to be growth without development, oriented toward th…
