  • Introduction

    William H Friedland, Frederick H Buttel et al.•CHAPTER•Towards a New Political Economy…•2021

The discussion the turns to a consideration of the intellectual substance of the new political economy of agriculture, assessing die parameters of the field and some of the topical areas that are emerging but which were not encompassed in the Madison miniconference. • On Misunderstanding the Second Contradiction Thesis

    Alan P Rudy, Alan Rudy•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 21

James O’Connor’s “second contradiction” thesis is widely misunderstood as an ecological crisis theory. Most of the criticisms of the theory derive from this misreading, including those which ignore relations between ecological, personal and communal conditions and those which see the “first” and “second” contradictions as materially distinct. O’Connor himself is partially responsible for the misreading, however. His writings tended to put the eco…

  • Ecosocialisms, Past, Present and Future

    Damian F White, Brian J Gareau et al.•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2017•Cited by: 21•References: 47

John Bellamy Foster and his colleagues have recently argued that the project of ecosocialism should be understood in terms of a "prefigurative" and "first stage" of red-green thinkers whose insights have largely been transcended by their own work on the metabolic rift. Rift scholars have further argued that "second-stage" ecosocialists should push back against "idealist" deviations occurring amongst historical materialists concerned with the prod…

  • Nature, Sociology, and Social Justice

    Open Access•Alan P Rudy, Alan Rudy et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 41

Environmental sociology remains on the periphery of the discipline because its traditional moment focuses on the material rather than social world and its synthetic moment looks as much like geography, anthropology, science studies, and cultural studies as it does sociology. This article will review contemporary visions of the history of nature and the environmental movement and their consequences of environmental sociological pedagogy. In doing …

Open Access•Alan Rudy, Toby A Ten Eyck•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•2006

In 1998, a contract was signed between the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) and Novartis in which the latter agreed to give UCB's Department of Plant and Microbial Biology US$25 million over a five year period. This Agreement was the foundation for debates that split the university over issues related to corporate control of the university, the environmental and social consequences of biotechnology, intellectual property rights, and aca…

  • Capitalism, Democracy, and Ecology

Alan P Rudy, Alan Rudy et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•2001

The world that was revolutionized by industrialization is being remade by the information revolution. But this is mostly a revolution from above, increasingly shaped by a new class of technocrats, experts, and professionals in the service of corporate capitalism. Using Marx as a touchstone, Timothy W. Luke warns that if communities are not to be overwhelmed by new class economic and political agendas, then the practice of democracy must be recons…
