  • Degrowth and Socialism: Notes on Some Critical Junctures

    Open Access•Güney Işıkara, Özgür Narin•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2023•Cited by: 1

Increasingly, scholarship around degrowth and socialism are coalescing around certain shared ideas, namely, that capitalism is at the root of our planetary crisis. Güney Işıkara and Özgür Narin draw out key points of convergence among these thinkers, as well as discrepancies in the two approaches to creating a future egalitarian and sustainable society

  • Capitalism, Economics, and Externalities: What Are Externalities External to

    Güney Işıkara•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2023•References: 37

Externalities, as both a pervasive phenomenon and a concept, lie at the centre of ecological thought and policy debates. This paper questions the adequacy of deeming of pervasive phenomena as externalities including by some authors in the (eco)socialist tradition. It critically reflects on the epistemological underpinnings of what is seen as internal and what as external, and reveals the role of methods used in economics as well as real social an…

  • Beyond the nation-state narrative: An empirical inquiry into the cross-country and cross-income-group carbon consumption patterns

    Open Access•Ying Chen, Güney Işıkara•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2022

The concern for inequality, growth and development is undoubtedly crucial in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation. However, most studies either rely on the nation-state estimates of carbon emissions to propose a uniform nation-wide growth (or degrowth) strategy, or they tailor the method to assess the inequality of one country at a time, making a cross-country cross-income comparison difficult. To fill this analytical gap, we s…

  • The Potentials and Limits of Computing Technologies for Socialist Planning

    Open Access•Güney Işıkara, Güney IŞikara et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2022•References: 2

The notion of productive forces is usually grasped from a narrow perspective which reduces its content to technology and productivity. The distinction between force ( Kraft ) and its expression ( Äußerung ) plays a key role in Marx's dialectical analysis. Insofar as force is the outcome of a relation in dialectics, productive forces comprise an active element, namely labor. It is through the mediation of this active element that relations of prod…

  • The Weight of Essentials in Economic Activity

    Open Access•Güney Işıkara•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2021

The paper develops a measure for the weight of essential goods and services in different spheres of economic activity. The first measure is concerned with the sphere of production, which makes use of World Input-Output Tables to construct net-product subsystems so as to estimate the total (direct and indirect) share of essentials. The second measure approaches the same question from the consumption side and relies on Organization for Economic Coo…

  • Price-Value Deviations and the Labour Theory of Value: Evidence from 42 Countries, 2000–2017

Güney Işıkara, Patrick Mokre•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The relationship between prices and labour values has been the source of fruitful controversy since the earliest Classical Political Economists. The alleged refutation of the labour theory of value was an integral part of the marginalist attack against Classical and Marxist analysis. However, statistical analysis of price-value relationships made possible by the data available since the later 20th century suggest considerable empirical strength o…
