  • Covid-19 Pandemic and Vaccine Imperialism

    Open Access•Stergios A Seretis, Stavros Mavroudea et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2024•References: 6

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed and exacerbated the global inequalities regarding the availability and access to vaccines. Many terms have appeared in the academic literature (“vaccine colonialism,” “vaccine nationalism,” “vaccine apartheid”) trying to capture and interpret these inequalities, failing in most cases to realistically explain the upstream causes of the observed injustices. A Marxist perspective on the contrary emphasizes the structur…

  • The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic upon employment and inequality in the Mediterranean EU

Open Access•Andrew Herod, Stelios Giali et al.•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 7

COVID-19 is a global pandemic but has a particular geography to it, differentially affecting people and places. Here we explore its impact upon labour markets in the Mediterranean European Union (EU) countries. Our analysis is part of a collective work-in-progress monitoring the pandemic’s effects upon workers since early March 2020. First we note that there is a geographical political economy to pandemics. We then scrutinise the current pandemic…

  • Once Again on the Alleged Differences between Engels and Marx

    Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros D Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Engels is the co-founder of Marxism. However, he sometimes came under attack as a distorter of Marx’s thought. The first wave of attacks (1970s and 1980s) focused on philosophical and methodological issues. The second wave of attacks emerged since the 1990s and centred more on political economy, pioneered by the Neue Lekture and the Sraffians. It maintains that Engels distorted Capital by making unwarranted interventions during his editing of the…

  • The Economic and Political Consequences of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2020•Cited by: 1

The COVID-19 epidemic has triggered a twin (health and economic crisis). The first is caused by the "metabolic rift" (capitalism's uncontrollable and insatiable commodification of nature) that leads to the modern "emerging epidemics" of zoonoses. The economic crisis was already simmering but lockdowns triggered and aggravated its eruption. Furthermore, it argues that socialism is better equipped to confront health crises due to its superior state…

  • Friedrich Engels and his Contribution to Marxism

    Open Access•Stavros Mavroudea•ARTICLE•Human Geography•2020•References: 2

The 200th anniversary of the birth of F. Engels comes at a time when his contribution to Marxism is being disputed by Neue Lekture and Sraffian authors, based on the alleged discovery of him having distorted Capital. The evidence presented by the new anti-Engelsionists is flimsy and essentially philological hair-splitting arguments. The common ground uniting them is their abhorrence for the existence of Marxism as a coherent theoretical tradition…

  • Contending Economic Theories

    Stavros Mavroudea•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2016

This book—a thorough revamping and extension of the authors’ Economics: Marxian versus Neoclassical (1987)—presents a simple, but not simplistic, comparison of the main alternative streams of econo

  • Virtual Water

Stelios Giali, Stavros Mavroudea et al.•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Water is a fundamental resource for the reproduction of humankind and should be treated in a sustainable manner. However, capitalism has a propensity for devouring water and other natural resources

  • Development and Crisis

    Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros D Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This paper offers an explanation of the current Greek crisis, it disputes the mainstream “debt crisis” explanation and argues that it is a twin crisis: a crisis of capital over-accumulation aggravated by the participation in the European Union. The second part analyses the turbulent historical course of Greek capitalism through the main phases of its development, their crises and resulting restructurings. In particular, it pinpoints its status as…

  • Financial regulation in the light of the current global economic crisis

    Stavros Mavroudea, Demophanes Papadatos•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2012•References: 2

The regulation or non-regulation of finance and its extent and forms has always been an issue in the historical development of capitalism. This issue is crucial for the system's modus operandi since in capitalism money (and its provision, i.e. finance) operates as capital (i.e. the provider of the means for entrepreneurial activities), whereas its importance in previous socioeconomic systems was significantly less. This paper argues that there is…

  • Duration, Intensity and Productivity of Labour and the Distinction between Absolute and Relative Surplus-value

Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Marx recognized two distinct but also interrelated processes of increasing surplus-value extraction: absolute and relative surplus-value. Both these processes hinge upon the duration, the intensity and the productivity of labour, albeit in different ways. The increase of the duration of labour is indisputably related to absolute surplus-value and the increase of labour productivity to relative surplus-value. However, there is controversy regardin…

  • Work More or Work Harder? The Duration and Intensity of Work in Marx's Capital

    Open Access•Alexis Ioannides, Stavros Mavroudea et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 4

The relationship between the duration of work (working time) and its intensity is a rather neglected issue in economic theory, both neoclassical and heterodox. Marx's analysis of this subject remains highly original and accurate. Furthermore, a dissenting minority of neoclassical labor economists have — consciously or unconsciously — followed his theses. The main points of the Marxian analysis are: a) the existence of an inverse relationship betw…

  • A History of Contemporary Political Economy and Postmodernism

    Open Access•Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros D Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2006

The study of the history of economic theory is entwined with nonneoclassical and especially Marxist political economic analyses, which relate the creation of an autonomous science of economic relations to the establishment of capitalism. Usually, the main agents in this interaction are social groups and especially social classes. Contrarily, neoclassical orthodoxy understands the history of economic theory as mere history of economic thought, a s…

  • Regulation Theory

    Open Access•Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•Science & Society•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Regulation Theory aims, on a historicist and insti-tutionalist basis and via a middle-range methodology, to explain capitalist development. However, both its theoretical and meth-odological perspectives are unfit for this purpose. Middle-range methodology prioritizes superficial features of reality, fails to implement dialectical abstraction and, consequently, fails to grasp either the deeper roots or the actual course of historical evolution. Re…
