Microaggressions and disablism
The study explores how disabled students experience microaggressions as everyday expressions of disablism within higher education institutions. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study examines everyday interactions that undermine disabled students’ autonomy, identity and status as epistemic and social participants. Eight domains of microaggressions were identified, including denial of identity, patronisation, and desexual…
The Development of the “Checklist for Life Skills Educational Assessment” (CLSEA)
Students with developmental disabilities constitute a heterogeneous group with significant difficulties in adaptive behavior. It is expected that educational programs are equipped with the appropriate resources to support students and promote their skills related to adaptive behavior, such as life skills. A critical issue for the development and implementation of appropriate educational interventions in the domain of life skills is the availabili…
School principal's attitudes towards inclusive education
Disabled students’ voices about their psycho-social and educational experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic
This article presents a study about the psycho-social and educational experiences of disabled students during the COVID-19 pandemic, from quarantine and remote learning to the transition back to their schools. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with 45 primary and secondary school-aged disabled students attending both regular and special schools in Greece. Despite the identification of some positive experiences, not all disabled…
Organizational preparedness domains and indicators of educational organizations for students with disabilities in pandemic times
Background The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on educational systems has caused a profound shift in the organization and delivery of education worldwide. The effects of the pandemic crisis on educational systems proved to be detrimental for students with disabilities, highlighting not only the looming social and educational inequalities but also the huge gap in organizational preparedness for education, including identifying the main areas (doma…
The Importance of School Principals’ Values towards the Inclusive Education of Disabled Students
The current paper presents part of a broader, large-scale study regarding inclusive education and educational leadership in Greece that highlights the decisive role that school principals’ values play into shaping inclusive education. Its proposed theoretical model, based on extensive bibliographical research, explores the relationships between values, and knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and practices regarding the education of disabled students, h…
Energy Transitions
Major energy transitions are associated not only with fundamental transformations of the energy sector but also with multidimensional changes in societies. Existing energy systems are heavily implicated in climate change. This paper investigates from an ecosocialist perspective the prevalent high-carbon energy systems in capitalism and their ongoing transformations, with a special focus on Greece as an EU member. Furthermore, it explores whether …
Microaggressions and Psychosocial Adjustment among Greek University Students with Disabilities
This study investigated differences in experiences of microaggressions between students with different characteristics (type, visibility, severity, and onset of impairment) and associations between the occurrence of microaggressions and specific psychological dimensions, such as stress, depression, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. It also examined how the afore-mentioned psychological factors and microaggressions contribute to students’ adjust…
The EU Emissions Trading System in Crisis-Ridden Greece
Neoliberal capitalism has extended the use of markets to address climate and energy issues. Carbon trading characteristically exemplifies the neoliberalization of climate policy. This paper discusses the workings of the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) in the European Union (EU) with a focus on its application in crisis-ridden Greece. Beyond environmental effectiveness and distributional effects, the paper explores the interacti…

Policy Guidelines for Effective Inclusion and Reintegration of People with Chronic Diseases in the Workplace
The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases among the European working age population, as well as the implications for the individual and societal level, underline the need for policy guidelines targeting the effective inclusion of persons with chronic diseases in the workplace. The aim of the present paper was to explore the perspectives of European and National-level stakeholders on existing strategies for work re-integration of persons with …
Appropriating Nature in Crisis-ridden Greece
This is the second paper in a two-paper series in which we present how the ongoing crisis in Greece has been used to accelerate the neoliberal restructuring of Greece with serious implications for the appropriation of nature. In this paper we focus specifically on particular aspects of the austerity programs that relate to natural resources and natural conditions. We examine changes to the business environment and ongoing privatization schemes to…
The EU's Emissions Trading System, Part 2
This is part 2 of a paper that revisits the European Union's Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) in an attempt to take stock of how the system has worked and evaluate it from the standpoint of radical political economy. In part 1 of the paper the basic design, the workings and the outcomes of the scheme were discussed with critical perceptiveness. In particular, the paper revealed the unsatisfactory results of the scheme (even in its own proclaimed…
Appropriating Nature in Crisis-ridden Greece
The ongoing crisis in Greece constitutes an emblematic case of repressive capitalist restructuring. In this first part of a two-paper series, we argue that public debt is used as a vehicle for furthering the neoliberal transformation of Greek society with serious implications for the appropriation of nature. We present theoretical considerations about nature in capitalism, the rationale of neoliberal capitalist restructuring, as well as the relat…
The EU's Emissions Trading System, Part 1
This is part 1 of a paper that revisits the European Union's Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) in an attempt to take stock of how the system has worked and evaluate it from the standpoint of radical political economy. The paper briefly discusses the basics of the scheme, including its design as a financial instrument and its performance during the first trading period (2005–2007). It then moves to elaborating on the workings of the scheme during …
Disabled students’ narratives about their schooling experiences
An ongoing interest in disabled learners’ voices has been reflected in a number of studies that explore students’ experiences of schooling, as part of the quest to understand how inclusive education can be achieved. These studies, however, have been conducted mainly in industrially developed countries, while very few studies exist from industrially developing countries such as Greece in which disabled people’s voices are under-represented not onl…
The Greek Economy in Turmoil
Following a radical political economy, this paper offers a distinctive account of the crisis of the Greek economy. The public debt crisis of Greece is better understood when positioned within the neoliberal turn of global capitalism, which has shaped the prevailing European Monetary Union (EMU), and under the severe negative impacts of the current international crisis on weaker economies. However, the Greek debt crisis is deeply rooted in the uns…
Climate Change
The Kyoto Protocol entered into force on February 16, 2005. Emissions reductions targets established by the protocol will be met by domestic policies and by three international flexible mechanisms: clean development, joint implementation, and emissions trading. Following a value-theoretic and class-based approach, the purpose of this paper is to analyze these flexible mechanisms. In particular, the paper investigates the nature and adoption of fl…
Ranking and the prospects of heterodox economics in Greece
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the past experience of ranking of journals and Economics departments in Greece. Design/methodology/approach The paper provides a critical assessment of rankings on heterodox economists in Greece. Findings Modeled after the Anglo‐American patterns, albeit unofficial, ranking had a detrimental impact on heterodox economics in terms of hiring and promotion, and of the subject content of academic progra…
Greek teachers’ belief systems about disability and inclusive education
This paper is based on the argument that dominant beliefs and their associated assumptions are a core area of exploration in understanding the process of change and the politics of resistance in education. It commences with an analysis of the role, function and importance of beliefs in the development of special‐inclusive education and continues with the exploration of Greek teachers’ beliefs about disability and inclusion. The insights offered i…
Role of special/support teachers in Greek primary schools
Pull‐out programmes, resource, and/or support rooms and services have played a vital role in either hindering or promoting the implementation of more inclusive practices in school communities. In Greece there is a strong assumption that support rooms and part‐time withdrawal are the most effective ways of promoting the educational and social inclusion of children defined as having special needs. It is this assumption that the present analysis int…

Capitalism and ecological sustainability
Detailed analyses of environmental policies and their implications for the ecological sustainability of capitalism are missing from the eco-Marxist literature. Moreover, environmental policies have been often dismissed by several eco-Marxists on the ground that they are shaped on capital's terms. It is the objective of this paper to theorize the shaping of environmental regulation from a value-theoretic and class struggle perspective. It is argue…
Education and inclusive policy-making
It seems that inclusion has become a global issue while in different countries we can find a number of stated intentions and written policies to move towards its achievement. However, despite the magnitude of the debate towards inclusion efforts to create more inclusive schooling communities are fraught with multiple difficulties, dilemmas and contradictions that often result into piecemeal or sequential reforms. In light of the above, this paper…

Nature and Value Theory
Marx's theory of value can be used to provide a rich account of capitalist degradation of the environment and depletion of natural resources. Natural aspects are among the regulating conditions of production that determine the value of commodities. The use of better natural conditions and resources than those used by regulating capitals results in superprofits, appropriated as rents in the case of landed property. Depletion of natural resources a…
