Sects & Social Disorder: Muslim Identities & Conflict in Northern Nigeria
Analyses Muslim-Muslim divisions within northern Nigeria, which are as important for understanding the violence in the region as those between Muslim and Christian (for which, see the companion volume, Creed and Grievance ),with consequences for long-term peacemaking. Nigerian society has long been perceived as divided along religious lines, between Muslims and Christians, but alongside this there is an equally important polarization within the M…

Markets and identities in Africa: Honouring Gavin Williams
The six articles in this issue of the Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE) address the complex and contradictory relationship between markets, identities and economic change in contemporary Africa, with a specific focus on Nigeria and South Africa.Together, they explore how economic processes of globalisation, liberalisation, privatisation and subordination are shaped by the mobilisation and resistance of racial and cultural identities. And…
Zimbabwean farmers in Nigeria: Exceptional farmers or spectacular support
Since 2004, white commercial farmers displaced under Zimbabwe's fast-track land reform programme have established new successful farms near the central Nigerian town of Shonga. This article explores the basis of that success. It addresses three key questions: (1) What has actually happened near Shonga since 2004? (2) What or who is driving the process of agrarian transformation? And (3) What are the long-term consequences for the peasantry since …
Institutionalising ethnic representation: How effective is affirmative action in Nigeria?
To deal with the tensions created by ethnic diversity and inequalities, many African countries have instituted affirmative action programmes ranging from informal ethnic balancing to explicit quotas. This study examines the reasons for affirmative action in Nigeria and the effectiveness of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) that was set up to oversee the programme. It argues that the affirmative action is an important aspect of governance in …

Nigeria during the Abacha Years (1993-1998): The Domestic and International Politics of Democratization
The autocratic regime of Sani Abacha (1993-1998) stands out as a watershed in the history of independent Nigeria. Nigeria’s darkest years since the civil war resulted from his unrestrained personal rule; very close to the features associated with warlordism. Nepotism, corruption, violation of human rights, procrastination over the implementation of a democratic transition, and the exploitation of ethnic, cultural or religious identities, also res…

When Will Independence End? Democratization and Civil Society in Rural Africa
Rural communities played a significant part in the decolonization process in Africa, be it in the cocoa hold-ups of Ghana and Nigeria, or in the armed struggle in Kenya and Zimbabwe. With the attainment of independence, however, most of the non-hegemonic social classes were demobilized from the political process, as the politics of authoritarianism and personal rule gained ground, often under the cover of promoting ‘national integration’ or ‘deve…

Peasant society and the environment in Rural Kano∗
The national question and radical politics in Nigeria
In his introduction to Billy Dudley's posthumous book (1982:8), A.D. Yahaya stated that: The political future of the country as one indivisible nation is resolved with the end of the civil war ... It is therefore not conceivable for the present generation of Nigerians who were so much part of the struggle for the survival of the federation to resuscitate the unity of the country as a political issue. The major political issue today is, therefore,…
