  • Catching Up and Falling Behind in Selected Latin American Countries

Open Access•Adalmir Marquetti, Alessandro Miebach et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2025•References: 4

This article examines and compares the economic growth trajectories of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico from 1950 to 2019. Using a classical-Marxian approach, we explore the region’s economic performance. Latin America was one of the most dynamic regions in the global economy during the golden age of 1945–1973. However, during neoliberalism, most Latin American countries fell behind. Our analysis reveals that these nations are locke…

  • Productive and Unproductive Sectors’ Interactions in Brazil

Open Access•Henrique Morrone, Adalmir Marquetti et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2023

This article employs Miyazawa’s method to investigate the interaction between productive and unproductive sectors during the 2002–2014 period in Brazil. The results showed a growing dependence of productive on unproductive sectors together with a rise in the unproductive share in the economy, particularly after 2008. Our findings stressed the relationship between the rising importance of unproductive industries and lower total output growth, as e…

Open Access•Adalmir Marquetti, EDUARDO MALDONADO FILHO et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2023•References: 6

  • Rate of Profit in the United States and in China (2007–2014)

Open Access•Adalmir Marquetti, Catari Vilela Chaves et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2021

This paper investigates the turbulent behavior that might exist under a national average rate of profit. We use a database—ORBIS—that allows our investigation to start from the level of the firm, with data from 2007 to 2014. A comparison between the United States and China organizes the statistical description of the rates of profit in those countries. Three issues are investigated: the trajectories of the national average rate of profit and thei…

  • A Classical-Marxian Growth Model of Catching Up and the Cases of China, Japan, and India

Open Access•Adalmir Marquetti, Luiz Eduardo Ourique et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2020

This article presents a classical-Marxian model of catching up wherein the leader country employs a technique with higher labor productivity and lower capital productivity than the follower’s technique. The follower’s higher profit rate allows for faster capital accumulation than the leader’s. During the catching up phase, labor productivity rises while capital productivity and profit rate decline in the follower country. In addition, we discuss …

  • Profitability and Distribution

Open Access•Adalmir Marquetti, Adalmir Antônio Marquetti et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 8

The PT governments combined elements of developmentalism and neoliberalism in a contradictory construction, organizing a large political coalition of workers and capitalists that allowed expanding the real wage and reducing poverty and inequality while maintaining the gains of productive and financing capitals. The decline of profitability after the 2008 crisis broke the class coalition constructed during Lula's administration. The Dilma Rousseff…

  • Technical progress in GDP production and CO2 emissions in Brazil

Márcio Santetti, Adalmir Marquetti et al.•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2019•References: 2

In this study, technical progress is analysed in terms of its influence on the mix of inputs of labour, capital and energy that go into the production of gross domestic product (GDP) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The results of this analysis show that the Brazilian economy exhibited a Marx-biased pattern of technical progress during the period under study. Within the framework of this overall pattern, however, three different phases of tech…

  • Padrões de mudança técnica nas economias latino-americanas

Open Access•Adalmir Marquetti, Adalmir Antônio Marquetti et al.•ARTICLE•Economia e Sociedade•2017

  • Patterns of technical progress in the Brazilian economy, 1952-2008

Adalmir Marquetti, Melody De Campos Soares Porsse•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 1

This article analyses the pattern of technical change in the Brazilian economy between 1952 and 2008. A Marx-biased pattern of labour-saving and capital-using change predominated in the period under study. Three phases in the dynamism of technical change can be distinguished, however. The first, from 1952 to 1973, was highly dynamic. In the second, from 1973 to 1991, this dynamism lessened. Lastly, between 1991 and 2008, the dynamism of technical…
