Decentering Food Pedagogies
In this collaborative essay, five gastrofeminists from various disciplines, mainly literature, anthropology, sociology, ethnic studies, and diverse locations of Global South and Global North, share four collaborative experiments built around two axioms: to integrate experiences of students as gendered and racialized subjects in their experiential learning irrespective of disciplinary boundaries, and to integrate critical feminist scholarship that…

Marketing Dreams, Manufacturing Heroes: The Transnational Labor Brokering of Filipino Workers
In a globalized economy that is heavily sustained by the labor of immigrants, why are certain nations defined as "ideal" labor resources and why do certain groups dominate a particular labor force? The Philippines has emerged as a lucrative source of labor for countries around the world. In Marketing Dreams, Manufacturing Heroes Anna Romina Guevarra focuses on the Philippines—which views itself as the "home of the great Filipino worker"—and the m…

Filipino Studies: Palimpsests of Nation and Diaspora
After years of occupying a vexed position in the American academy, Philippine studies has come into its own, emerging as a trenchant and dynamic space of inquiry. Filipino Studies is a field-defining collection of vibrant voices, critical perspectives, and provocative ideas about the cultural, political, and economic state of the Philippines and its diaspora. Traversing issues of colonialism, neoliberalism, globalization, and nationalism, this vo…

Immigrant Women Workers in the Neoliberal Age
To date, most research on immigrant women and labor forces has focused on the participation of immigrant women in formal labor markets. This book focuses on informal economies such as health care, domestic work, street vending, and the garment industry, where displaced and undocumented women are more likely to work. Because such informal labor markets are unregulated, many of these workers face abusive working conditions that are not reported for…

This statement is a call to action by U.S. indigenous and women of color feminists after a visit to Palestine in June 2011
Managing 'Vulnerabilities' and 'Empowering' Migrant Filipina Workers: The Philippines' Overseas Employment Program
This essay examines the Philippine state's incorporation of a ‘gender-sensitive criteria’ within its overseas employment policy framework in recognition of the increasing participation of Filipinas in the global economy and their ‘vulnerabilities’ in the workplace. However, such recognition and strategies in place for minimizing women's vulnerabilities reflect a neoliberal framework that promotes economic competitiveness and entrepreneurship and …
The Balikbayan Researcher: Negotiating Vulnerability in Fieldwork with Filipino Labor Brokers
This article examines the power dynamics of doing fieldwork in a politicized and contentious setting of the Philippines' labor recruitment industry as a Balikbayan, a returning migrant whose privileged position creates a source of vulnerability in the field. I describe and problematize the acceptable positions I negotiated with labor brokers as a sympathetic "outsider-within" and a culturally competent Filipina American. I argue that doing resear…
