The Impact of Grammar on the Construal of Discourse Alternatives in German and English
This paper investigates additive links to discourse alternatives in picture comparison dialogues produced by adult native speakers of English and German. Additive relations are established across turns when participants are confirming the presence of matching objects on both pictures (A: "I have X". B: "I also have X"). Speakers thereby describe their own picture and construe the interlocutor (or rather: the interlocutor's picture) as a discourse…
Chapter 11. What comes second
On the basis of previous cross-linguistic analyses of (re)narrations of the same animation film in German and English, the present study shows how these (re)narrations in Dutch as another Germanic language seem to side more with German than with English in the temporal management of the story-line. English in product advertisements in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain
This paper reports on a quantitative investigation into the occurrence of English in product advertisements in Dutch-speaking Belgium, French-speaking Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. For each country six issues of Elle in 2004 were collected and all ads of half a page or larger were analyzed, for a total of 2,384 different ads. More than two-thirds of those ads contained one or more English words. The actual occurrence of Eng…
Information Structure and the Dynamics of Language Acquisition
The papers in this volume focus on the impact of information structure on language acquisition, thereby taking different linguistic approaches into account. They start from an empirical point of view, and examine data from natural first and second language acquisition, which cover a wide range of varieties, from early learner language to native speaker production and from gesture to Creole prototypes. The central theme is the interplay between pr…
