  • Social Categorisations in China's Era of Aging

    Open Access•Björn Alpermann•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2026

Chinese population policy has long been shown to be a highly productive site for generating new social categories to enable governance. The article employs the sociology of knowledge approach to discourse and focuses on two recently much-debated categories: “families who lost their only child” ( shidu jiating ) and “empty-nest elderly” ( kongchao laoren ). Here, population policies intersect with larger social trends and new family situations. I …

In the Western world China stands accused of severe human rights violations regarding its treatment of the Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim minorities in its northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. This is the first article to systematically analyze the response of China’s international state media to these allegations. By studying the YouTube channels of two leading Chinese state media, China Global Television Network (CGTN) and Ne…

esearch ethics is an underdiscussed topic in Chinese studies that has only recently attracted more attention due to increasing geopolitical tensions and the concomitant anxieties about China's shifting global role.In this essay, I aim to reflect on often-overlooked aspects of research ethics in the study of contemporary China and consider the implications for the field going forward. My comments proceed in three steps, discussing professional, per…

  • China’s Rural–Urban Transformation

    Open Access•Björn Alpermann•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 8

China’s urbanisation drive has been unprecedented in scale. It has also produced some paradoxical outcomes and led to multiple interconnections between the rural and the urban spheres. These interconnections are the central focus of this special issue. Thus, preference is given to the term “rural–urban transformation” instead of simply “urbanisation.” The main argument advanced here is that we always need to consider the rural aspects and repercu…

  • Population Planning after the One-Child Policy

Björn Alpermann, Shaohua Zhan•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2018•Cited by: 12

Since late 2013, one of China’s most controversial policies—the one-child policy—has been gradually phased out, culminating in the reorganization of the National Health and Family Planning Commission in early 2018, which saw it drop the family planning part from its name. Has China forgone population intervention and started to pursue a liberal population policy? This article demonstrates that the Chinese political leadership is still determined …

  • Fukuyama and the Chinese middle class

    Björn Alpermann•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Governance•2016•References: 9

Francis Fukuyama's recent works have rekindled interest in the larger questions of political development and have been discussed widely, including in China. This essay argues, first, that his theoretical perspective is squarely rooted in the classical modernization paradigm which is inherently teleological, but it develops its tenets and adds new insights to this body of theory. This qualifies Fukuyama's theoretical perspective as 'Modernization …

    Björn Alpermann•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2009•Cited by: 6

Most studies of political reforms in rural China have concentrated on village elections, pointing out important effects of this democratic mechanism. However, while significant in broadening the 'access to power', even well conducted village elections fall short of altering the 'exercise of power', which has received far less research attention. Therefore, this article focuses on the procedural dimension of post-election village governance. It ar…
