World Christianity
I have often compared the study of world Christianity to mapping terrain as it is changing. The task is not simply to constantly update old maps. We are compelled to ask questions about what the maps are for, what new methods of mapping are needed, and how they are to be delivered. A two-dimensional map seeking to represent a three-dimensional world will inevitably have distortions. How do we develop resources for identifying and addressing such …

PNEUMA: The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, Volume 27, No. 1, Spring 2005 © 2005 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden pp. 35–50 1 This is a question explicitly raised concerning the Brazilian context by Richard Shaull and Waldo Cesar in their recent book, Pentecostalism and the Future of the Christian Churches: Promises, Limitations, Challenges (Grand Rapids, MI and Cambridge, UK: Wm. B. Eerdmans, 2000). In his “Introduction” (p. 115) Sha…
Ecumenical Dislodgings
Ecumenics and missions through much of the 20th century were closely related disciplines. In recent years mission studies has matured significantly in coming to grips with a new world Christian reality. The ecumenical movement on the other hand has not fared so well. A renewed effort to relate Christianity to its local projects across the historical landscape of the globe, which was intrinsic to the 20th century ecumenical project, is called for,…
