Imperial Gaze in the Historiography of Amarna Politics
The discovery of the Amarna letters in 1887 and their subsequent translation made it possible for ancient Near Eastern specialists of the time to shed new light on the sociopolitical conditions of Syria-Palestine during the Late Bronze Age. In reviewing the scholarly literature of the period and following decades, we may see that the situations of internal conflict described in the letters allowed researchers to draw a general picture of ancient …
Patronage, Sectarianism, and Cultural Hegemony
Patronage relationships have been ethnographically found at many locations in the Middle East during the second half of the twentieth century but also detected in ancient Near Eastern sources in more recent times, in every case mostly in connection with political situations. Patronage, however, also operates at the level of mentalities and its expression is equally discovered in worldviews of different cultures. This condition may therefore be ob…
Ancient Individuals and Bourdieu in Context
This brief response article aims at addressing some of the themes covered in the main articles of this special issue of the Journal of Ancient History , “Social Biographies of the Ancient World,” from the perspective of historical anthropology. The emphasis is on the relevance of cultural variability for understanding historical situations, especially those coming from ancient contexts, and considering also the kind of textual and epigraphic sour…

Victorian ethnographic perceptions of Palestine and the historiography of ancient Israel
Victorian travellers, explorers and scholars in the Levant produced a series of ethnographic observations of Palestine’s indigenous population essentially through biblical lenses. These perceptions sought ultimately to retrieve the biblical past in the context of the imperial present. At the same time, modern historiography about ancient Israel developed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While the full-blown allochronism and Oriental…

Complot a Través De Los Tiempos
Some Remarks on Patronage in Syria-Palestine During the Late Bronze Age
Following the discussion presented in an article by R. Westbrook on patronage in the ancient Near East (JESHO 48/2, 2005), the aim of this paper is to continue with the discussion as well as to address some of the views on the topic regarding Syria-Palestine during the Late Bronze Age, using examples from the Amarna letters and Hittite treaties. Some of the critical questions that should be addressed in further discussions on the subject are rela…
On Israel's Ethnogenesis and Historical Method
Dealing with Tribes and States in Ancient Palestine
This paper offers a critique on state formation theories used in the explanation of the rise of the biblical United Monarchy. The last three decades of archaeological and biblical research have shown that there is no firm evidence for speaking of a kingdom or empire of David and Solomon in ancient Palestine. Thus what is proposed here is to evaluate the archaeological record through the data provided by the ethnological record of the Middle East,…

Notes on the looting of antiquities in Iraq and the memory of the west
The US-led Coalition that invaded Iraq on 2003 paved the road for the looting of cultural and archaeological resources of the country, which were rapidly incorporated into antiquities black markets. A critical view, as a mean to interpret the looting, points at three questions that should be addressed by historians and archaeologists, but also by political researchers: 1) the role of archaeological artifacts in Middle Eastern countries; 2) the id…
